1986 Silver Eagle Error

I just picked up an 86 eagle from Ebay, and when I finally got it, I found what appears to be an error coin, but do not know its value or frequency of these types of errors on the bullion coins.

The thickness is way off, one end is extremely thick and the other end is pretty thin with the edging actually beveled, instead of flat.

Is there a market for these types of errors on Eagles. I have only been collecting these for a few months now and this is the first error coin I have seen.

Howdy TeamSpeed - Welcome to the Forum !!

If it is an error, it is the first of its kind that I have ever heard of. I suggest you do a few things - weigh it, measure it and post pics if you can. And try to get a pic of the coin edgewise - to show this thickness issue you mention.

Thanks for the reply. After looking at it, the coin is not necessarily thicker at one end and thinner at the other. Half the coin around the sun end is actually beveled so much that it makes the coin look thin and the other end the edge was cut so sharp that it looks thicker. It looks like it was struck in such a way that there is a dual edge cut on it. I just took a shot of the edge, and plan to post it.

This pics are pretty big, so they take a bit to load.

    Bad beveled edge:

I don't see it as a error...This MIGHT be what they call a rail-road rim...I'm not too sure how it happens or even if this is one so I'll leave it at this.

Looks more loke a tipped planchet,, or possibly a broken collar error, I wish I could see the strike better in the photos;-) it is also possible that it was weakly struck and did not fill the collar like it should have.

Thanks for all your input. I was just curious about this because it looked really strange when I took it out of the flip to put it into my 1986 roll that was 2 short.

I suppose that PCGS or NGC would be able to better verify this coin, but as of right now, I am not a member, but maybe I will send this in when I do become one. The face of the coin is not very good, there are some fine scratches in it. It will be interesting seeing how it grades with this very strange deformity. I am not into errors, but I guess others are, and this makes it valuable to the right group.

I'm inclined to agree that it may be some sort of collar error. First I've ever seen.

If 1986 eagles go for around 15-18 on ebay, what would a good guess be for the value of this coin if I were just to sell it without grading it? I paid 14.50 for it expecting to use it to fill my 1986 tube that is short a couple, and am instead thinking I will just flip it back around on ebay.

Anything is possible - but I wouldn't expect much.
