So, I have always loved the Kennedy Half and it seems like putting together a set might be a fun project. Quick question about the 2014 clad issues. I know they released a 2 coin P/D set. Are those coins identical to coins released in rolls that year...or are the coins in the set a different? I know there were some higher releif issues that year and they reverted to the original design. So, my question is this...was there two UNC clad 2014-P issues and two UNC clad 2014-D issues or just one of each?
Not sure about your question but any type of cameos, deep reflective surfaces. Those will be the keepers.
There was a special 50th anniversary issue of the 2014 clad halves that was a special strike, and is graded SP rather than MS by the grading services.
@CamaroDMD This info and much more comes from the following site: https://kennedyhalfdollars.net/2014-kennedy-half-dollar/
2014 P & D Kennedy half dollars from the standard Uncirculated Set, bag or rolls were the normal strikes, i.e. spaghetti hair. (the US mint does state that the Uncirculated Sets are struck with a "special coining process used to make the coins. Uncirculated coins are manufactured using the same process as circulating coins but with some quality enhancements that produce sharp, intricately detailed images. These finishes make it easier to tell a true uncirculated coin from a circulating coin that simply hasn't been issued into circulation. They are struck on special presses using greater coining force than circulating coins. They have the same designs as circulating coins, but they are not meant for daily use. They are for collectors and are kept in better condition than coins that have been handled often”) In 2014, the US Mint offered a “United States Mint Coin Discovery Set” which had three Kennedy half dollars with the three different finishes, 2014-S Clad Proof, 2014-P Uncirculated and 2014-D Circulation. 2014 also saw the US Mint make several Kennedy half dollars to mark the 50th year of the series. All of these coins had the obverse hair design of Kennedy’s head with the design of the original 1964 design and included a clad set consisting of a P and D mintmark, a gold with the W mintmark and a set of four different silver coins MS 2014-D, Enhanced MS 2014-S, PR 2014-P and Reverse PR 2014-W.
OK...then, a complete list of 2014 Kennedy Half Dollars would look like this: 2014-P Clad - Normal Issue/Modern Design (mintage: 2,500,000) 2014-P Clad - 50th Anniversary Special Strike/Original Design (mintage: included above?) 2014-P 90% Silver Proof - UNC 50th Anniversary/Original Design (mintage: 219,173) 2014-D Clad - Normal Issue/Modern Design (mintage: 2,100,000) 2014-D Clad - 50th Anniversary Special Strike/Original Design (mintage: included above?) 2014-D 90% Silver - UNC 50th Anniversary/Original Design (mintage: 219,173) 2014-S Clad Proof - Normal Issue/Modern Design (mintage: 767,977) 2014-S 90% Silver Proof - Normal Issue/Modern Design (mintage: 472,107) 2014-S 90% Silver - Enhanced UNC 50th Anniversary/Original Design (mintage: 219,173) 2014-W 90% Silver Reverse Proof- 50th Anniversary/Original Design (mintage: 219,173) 2014-W 3/4oz Gold (mintage: 73,772) So, including the gold that would be 11 coins. Am I missing anything? Also was there any mintage figures noted for the P/D Clad special strike anniversary coins of were those figures included in with the normal coins?
That looks right. PCGS has a special registry set for the 50th anniversary coins with 7 spots in it. Not sure why they didn't include the 4 normal 2014 coins.
I don't know if there are many collectors that look at the Mint like I do. I look at the Mint every day to see if there is anything new, especially at the beginning of each year. I print out the annual list of coins to determine which coins or other product that I am interested in and put them on my calendar. In 2014, I saw the listing of the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy Half Dollar, 4 coin silver set. I was lucky enough to get one and they are beautiful. My collection is more a hit and miss rather than any particular set.
I have one too and I love it...but I am thinking about putting together a set of Kennedy Halves and for that I need to define what the set is. The only coins I bought from the mint in 2014 was the 4-coin silver set.
They have done a lot of things with the Kennedy Halves. You need to decide what type of set you want. All of them, high grade, just circulation issues, etc.
I'm in the process of making a checklist. I'm thinking all BU. No errors. But, I will include major varieties (accented hair, Type 1/2 MMs on 79/81 proofs, Satin Mint Set coins, ect.) I'm just trying to create a accurate checklist. If I decide to do this, I will probably get a couple custom Caps Albums to house the set in.
@CamaroDMD. The answer to this question was given above by @Tim C. 198,268 50th Anniversary Clad High Relief sets were sold. Since they are High Relief coins they are not included in with the normal coins. So, if you wanted to build complete set of Kennedy Halves, just for 2014, in addition to all the Silver coins you would need 4 clad coins. (P&D High Relief and P&D Business Strike).
Nope. That was a special mint set, and was graded by the TPGs as SP. I believe I posted my set a while ago.
