Congratulations to all of you that are now waiting for new coins! For my part, the Norwegian kroner is so weak towards the dollar and euro, so I have to search out more obscure auctions than the most popular ones in the US and Europe. As said earlier here; there are many hobbies within this hobby. One of mine is to relentlessly search for good buys I do find them, from time to time.
I was tempted to go crazy with those two long-shot bids but I decided that discretion is the better part of valor.
Upon further review, I was apparently second high bidder on three lots, not one as previously stated. On lots 7, 27, and 452, the winning bidder is shown to pay one dollar more than my second place bid. I really wanted 7 and 27, but missed by a smidge. My last bid on those two lots was my intended maximum. Hopefully, a CT person won those lots. This is the first auction of the FSR auctions, in which I have evaluated my bids and now intent to formulate a better strategy to reduce time spent and be otherwise more efficient.
Since I started bidding on Frank’s auctions, I’ve just started with my max bids (which are usually low) and then hope for the best. Fire and forget. Maybe not the best strategy but I think it works out better for me since the coins I bid on usually go for much higher than I was capable of bidding. This way, I don’t get caught up in auction fever and bid bid bid.
Most of my bids were bargain hunting-ish and were blown out. (Prices were very strong IMO, in some cases ridiculously so. COVID season seems to be bidding season!) My only really (stupidly!) strong bid was on Pinocchio (lot 252): An extremely silly coin. Maybe because I was rueing having missed out on the Augustus goatee die break. I haven't counted it, just posted it. Who else is brave enough?
I've done twice & they ended up taking much longer to get here due to customs or the PO just giving the package a state by state tour for 2 weeks.
That, my friend, is highlarious! You won the goblin king just don't walk under a bridge with that coin... or is that trolls? Anyway, due to my excitement. I will share with you all one of my three wins. This one I feel I stole for not much over opening price considering the historic value. And despite it being a fouree (though, 2 of the six examples I found were fourees. With a couple possible fourees as well) I couldn't help myself but go (kind of) big on this one: Frank's always hilarious comments: CIVIL WAR, 68-69 AD, Den, VESTA PR QVIRITVM, Vesta bust r/IO MAX CAPITOLINVS, Jupiter std in temple; RIC 128; fourree , F or so BUT much patchy core exposure, somewhat off-ctr, lgnds crude & partly off; bust clear; but pretty ugly. Or, as a certain deity would say, "A beautiful coin, folks, believe me, a beautiful coin, I can tell you that." But rare .
Trust Frank. When he says a coin is ugly, the coin is ugly. When he says a coin is pretty, the coin is pretty. You make a mistake when you don't read his text. He is better with a pen than with a camera. BTW, that is one ugly fourree. I have a few close to that bad but.....
... nothing this bad... doubtful. Lol. You busted me with a pretty ugly fouree (during the time of our coins you would've probably run me through). Not the ugliest on all O' CT. But pretty ugly nevertheless. Though, nevertheless, IMHO this is one of the ugliest coins during one of the most pivotal times in the history of western civilization. I respect both your opinion and your ire and am still very pleased, having not bought this coin for its possible beauty (my other 2 wins I'm very hopeful for though) but for the throw of the dice that civilization took during this time. I'm honestly thrilled to have such a rarity during such a pivotal time. And with so many players, that I both love and despise.
There are enough fourrees of the civil war period that I believe they were part of the official unofficial mints. Having one in any shape is an accomplishment few of us will ever boast. Congratulations.
"The goblin emperor," I love it! I had my eye on that fourrée too, came very close to bidding but in the end decided to content myself with my early Spanish Galba. I'm glad I didn't so you got your prize for a better price! I'll sure be disappointed if it looks like a regular ol' Hadrian when it arrives. Maybe I should I ask Frank to lie on the customs form?
