I've seen some early Korean struck coins like this on eBay for a few months now. First, I saw them offered from some former Soviet republic. Both are not genuine. The eagle coin is actually a very rare pattern which if it does appear in the market is a 5 figure coin
Yeah, I figured the Russian pattern wasn't legit, for sure. I wonder if these counterfeits are getting traction in the market, or are these just an eBay phenomenon?
The way I see it is anything that's worth more than $100 and in high demand is attractive enough for counterfeiters to make a small batch. 100 of these would make them an annual salary and reinvest in making more counterfeits.
Sadly even copper Korean coins of that era are counterfeited. I got stung a while back. This started approximately 10 years ago and is ramping up quite drastically.
Great thread. I surmise that even Meiji and Taisho era Japanese coins are also counterfeited. I came across an 1874 (Meiji 7) Trade Dollar that my Japanese teacher showed me. The weight was wrong. Thankfully she did not pay a significant amount of money for it.
