I am a sales rep in the medical field and cover Mississippi, Louisiana, and the lower half of Arkanas. I usually carry around $500 in cash and stop at small banks and buy all the half dollars they have. I search them and cash the ones I don't want in at a casino. I find casinos are great places to get dump large volumes of change as long as you don't go to the slots. This past December I purchased $720 from a bank in Terry, MS and hit the mother load. I found 104-1964 kennedy halves, 84 Franklins halves, 30 Liberty halves and $34.50 in 40% silver kennedy halves. Of the 104-1964 Kennedy halves I found two rolls to be bright BU. Most times I hit nothing but a coin or two but this is one of those rare finds and it keeps me seaching even more. Got the fever.

Wait untill you decide to buy your first coin.... That's when the fever kicks in and there is no escaping it.... be prepared to have monthly coin money if you will .... Welcome to the forum.

Sounds like you got a great deal!!!

So far I've only found a handful of silver coins in change but I know what fun it is!!!

Yes it is always good to keep them from the smelters. Do most banks have rolls of half dollars available?

Yes most banks I've been to have halves. The banks that I go to usually don't have more then one or two stop lights in the whole town and I have to beg for some tellers to go in the vault to get them. I find a lot of halves that have been through slot machines which damages the coins by rounding the edges but I hit the good ones once in awhile.

Maybe I'll ask the next time I go. I guess its not so bad that most casinos are going away from using coins.

I stopped at my bank today, (one of those little hole in the mall banks)
They only had 1 roll on hand so I went ahead and bought it, no silver but I did find a nice B.U. 1971, 1990 and 95.
    Finding a B.U. 91 and 95 didn't surprise me much but the 71 was a nice discovery.
I may keep them, I've never been into halves much but it might be fun to try and assemble a B.U. set from circulation.

I have two sets of halves that I working on. I know I will have to buy some to complete the sets but for now I enjoy the search. I find a lot of BU/AU coins and I check the best ones against what I already have. If the new coin is better than either of the ones I have I'll swap.

I have the Kennedy half album that goes from '64 to '85, and I have filled all but 10 of the slots from about 15 half dollar rolls I got from banks over a 2 week period. I've found a '64, '66 and '67 so far. No Franklins or Walking Liberties though...that must be a thrill to find one of them in a roll!!

Sounds like from reading other posts as well that you are alot more likely to find a silver half than a quarter or even a dime...

I hit the mother load at a Stop and Go store. I got 15 morgans 2 peace dollars 1 roll of Fraklins/64 kennedys 6 40% halfs. I was shaking when he pulled them out. I was asking if he had any IKE's. I bought over $400 in face value of odd coins from him. Mostly Susan B's and Sac's that I took to my bank. Even a few Casino tokens and a D mint token from a mint set.

A good find for sure. In addition to halves I also buy dollar coins at banks but have hit nothing special. I waiting for the day that they hand me a large dollar roll then I may be more into it. As it is I trying to tell thr difference between a wide rim SBA and a narrow rim. I seen a picture but heck if I can really tell on the coins I've had.

I'm kind of curious here again. Were these old silver halves mixed in with newer halves or did they all come from an old source???

From the bank in Terry MS I got 72 roll. The rolls that had silver usually had all silver. Two rolls were BU 1964 but not bank wrapped. Some rolls had Franklins and Liberty halves. I believe all the silver had been in the vault for years because the rolls were wrapped with yellow wrappers and not the newer brown ones. But this don't always hold true since I've purchased at least 5K in halves in the last year. I am glad I travel by a lot of small banks for coins and large casinos to change the ones I don't want in.

Makes total sense. You'd think people would be curious to check something that had been in a vault for years and years but they don't seem to care which is good for people like us who try to score from circulation.
