Dang ! Just my luck, I was gonna offer at least double that :(

But then I gave up collecting coins years ago. 'Course you knew that didn't ya Mike :D

In all seriousness Mike, that is one heck of a collectible and whoever got it is dang lucky ;)

You should have auctioned the items. I would have paid more and I suspect so would have many others for this unique purchase.

Exactly. Could be purely fabricated. Can someone authenticate the paper is that old, the ink is that old, the signature is hers? Even if legit, there is no way to know what coins (if any) were shipped with the letter.

I'd pay melt for it, toss the letter, break out the coins and spend them! lol As you might have guessed, I don't go for these types of numismatic items.

I don't think this is anything like the "Dead Seas Scrolls." Like I said, I would have paid more.

While I understand that, for example, at an ANA auction, this may bring quite a hefty price, the fact is that I sold it to someone who is a bit of a historian, is fairly well-known, and will give the piece the life that it deserves rather than having it plundered for the small amount of silver it contains as most dealers would.

And, he happens to be a long-time customer of HJB, so that makes it easy to let him have it for what I would consider to be a very fair price.

That is a great collectible! Not sure of its value but I think you could ask a reasonably high price and it would sell.

Don't know about mint errors, but she did have all those 64 Special Mint Sets.

  13. Compared to my other hobbies my wife much prefers this one, at least she hasn't come home to a 7' anti tank gun in the kitchen again since I started stacking precious metal coins
