Ever buy a coin, token, or medal on a whim? This would be something that caught your eye and that doesn't fit with your normal collecting interests. Post one of yours! Here is a Patriotic Civil War token, 1863 Thistle (F450/471-C, R-1). My pics are too bright (taken in direct sunlight) and the coin is darker than depicted. I'd say it is AU, but it does have some reverse squashing of the letters and also an obverse rim nick at 2:00. I know absolutely nothing about it and I didn't pay much for the ignorance. I think it's kind of neat.
ugghh.. Im trying so hard to post mine. I lost my camera, and am currently trying to focus and get good pics with a cell phone. Not working all that well nice coin cat
I think that is a cool token...over the last couple years I have grown quite fond of hard times tokens and I may begin to start collecting them at some point. I find them much more interesting than the standard large copper coins (sorry copper guys).
Hmmm.......are you guys so disciplined that you stay on a strict diet of your collecting theme? C'mon, post some pics of you "straying from the straight and narrow!" (And, no spock, this isn't an invitation for you to post a pic of yourself streaking naked through the streets) :mouth:
I purchased three of these when they were discovered just to have them. The RCM produced an unspecified number of Alpine Skiing Quarters which were supposed to bear the year 2007 on the obverse but instead have 2008. These pics arent of my coins but mine are exactly the same.
I grabbed a 1902 Russian 5 rouble a while back... Tsar Nicholas II. Dude had a tough time of it. It doesn't really fit, but it is a cool pre-Soviet era coin. Interesting history, Russia.
To the best of my recollection, I don't have anything like this in my collection, at least not in my coin collection (got a good one in my stamp collection.) Money is too tough to come by to spend it on whims.
I went to an Antique Fair near my home and came across a huge medal which I realised was from the Universal Exposition 1958... and bought for just £3 ($5). It has a diameter of over 70mm a depth of around 4mm and is of heavy guage silver. The weight a whopping 129.6 grams. Not my usual cup of tea as they say but a lucrative one when I sell it. Apparently around 3,500 medals were given at the Exposition of which I guess a third would be silver, so I assume it has rarity value. Best wishes, Mike.
As my collection knows no boundaries, I can't say I've really bought anything on a whim. Or, more accurately, EVERYTHING is bought on a whim!
Catbert--That's a really cool coin. And it's in great shape. 900fine Just beautiful. And mrbrklyn I guess those are proofs. (Israeli?) Just some comments. Bruce
