I've always looked for a good coin of Maxentius with extra fine condition. The very few I had are all poorly struck, though some of them are potin Tets from Alexandria. Now I had the chance to win this coin which was struck at Rome. I can now stare Maxentius' eye and try to read his mind, easily. The common reverse has Roma in temple. I can read RBT in exergue. It weighs 6.17 g. RIC VI- 210.
Very nice! I also have one from the Rome mint. Maxentius as Augustus, AD 307-312. Roman billon follis, 6.53 g, 24.6 mm, 10 h. Rome, AD 307-308. Obv: IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG, radiate head right. Rev: CONSERV VRB SVAE, Roma seated facing in hexastyle temple, head left, globe in right hand, scepter in left, shield at side behind, Victories as acroteria, wreath on pediment, H left, R S in exergue. Refs: RIC 202a; Cohen 21; RCV 14986.
Nice coins....Interesting rendition of the RBT @7Calbrey.... I've got a RIC 210 with RBS... Maxentius AE Follis, Rome. AD 306-312...23/25mm diameter..6.92gr Obverse..IMP C MAXENTIVS PF AVG, laureate head right. Reverse..CONSERV VRB SVAE, Roma seated front, head left, shield at her side, within hexastyle temple, holding globe and sceptre, wreath in pediment, knobs as acroteria. Mintmark RBS. RIC VI Rome 210; Sear 14987.
Here's my Maxentius. Maxentius, 306-312 A.D. Type: AE Follis, Rome mint (probably) 308-310 A.D. Obverse: Laureate head of Maxentius right, IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG Reverse: Roma seated facing left, holding orb, in hexastyle temple with peaked roof, wreath in pediment, CONSERV VRB SVAE Reference: RIC 210; Sear 14987
Well, that's a very attractive example, @7Calbrey . I particularly like the wreath in the pediment – a nice detail. Mine do not count as "extremely fine," but here they are: Maxentius, Roman Empire, AE1 ("follis"), 307–308 AD, Ticinium mint. Obv: MAXENTIVS P F AVG; bust of Maxentius, laureate, draped, cuirassed, r. Rev: CONSERV VRB SVAE; Roma seated in hexastyle temple, holding globe and sceptre; in exergue, PT. 26mm, 7.06g. Ref: RIC VI Ticinium 95. Ex Tauler y Fau, auction 40, lot 2464. Maxentius, Roman Empire, AE "Follis", 309–312 AD, mint: Ostia. Obv: IMP C MAXENTIVS PF AVG, laureate head right. Rev: AETERNITAS AVG N, the Dioscuri standing facing each other, each holding sceptre and the reins of his horse, mintmark MOSTQ. 24 mm, 5.38 g. Ref: RIC VI, 35 Q.
My favorite Maxentius type shows the above Dioscuri type with a wolf/twins added under the horses. Also Ostia mint:
Nice coins. Here is one that is not so nice - Maxentius Æ Follis (310-311 A.D.) Romulus as Divus Ae Follis Rome RIC 256 Obv. Head right bare. Rv. Eagle standing om hexastyle domed shrine. 310-311 A.D. 6.60 grms 25 mm
MAXENTIUS This was more "Ooops, I already had that one!" But, Dioscuri and added She-Wolf is always cool. RI Maxentius 306-312 CE AE Folles Dioscuri holding their horses She-Wolf
Great @Terence Cheesman - the DIVO Romulo type is excellent. I've been looking for one for awhile but can't find one in very collectible condition. Congrats.
