Help identify what happened

    Just got this Jefferson nickel out of a roll from the bank. I think it is an error, but I would like to know how this thing happens.

    The only error this coin has is the fact someone abused it. It's damaged.

  8. I can usually ID a cutting tool by the marks. In this case my guess (not 100% sure) is somebody hacking at it with a hatchet or a knife due to the lack of jaw or opposing blade marks.
