As the title states, I"m thinking about doing a quick and easy ( or maybe not) type set that I'm not afraid to leave out on display. Anybody else like to leave some stuff out on display just to have something to look at? It seems like keeping everything locked up in an appropriate atmosphere doesn't really let you enjoy stuff. I keep my regular circulated state quarters album out above my computer along with my birth year proof set. I was also thinking that since some sets take so long to put together, I'd like to get a feeling of accomplishment again, and put together a quick and easy set to leave out on display with the state quarters set. Sooooo.... I'm thinking about doing a quarters type set, going with the last year of mintage for each type, all the way back to draped bust and ending with a 98 Washington and then a Hawaii quarter. I think this would be an interesting and fun way to own one of each type. Does anybody know of a non-reactive holder I could find for 7 quarters? Does anybody make custom ones? I'd prefer for them to be in a single row.
that's a very cool Idea. My next set (I think) is going to be Indians and flying eagles, then after that Im going to do Roosies, those Ill leave out because they arnt that expensive. Im going to do them because my banl will need a rest after finishing my cents. LOL
Another idea is what I did (attempted to do but never completed it..lol) try to get a small cent type set done. from the Flying Eagle, to a regular zinc. It includes 12 coins total, so it is pretty easy. Flying Eagle 1859 IHC 1860-1863 IHC 1864-1909 IHC 1909 VDB Regular Wheatie Shell Wheatie '43 steel cent Copper Memorial '82 Copper '82 Zinc Zinc Memorial stainless
Wow, I underestimated that 1807! NGC's got them priced at double red book! Well, I'm not going to pay 400 bucks for one but I might be able to find a lower condition one I'd go with. 220,643 minted. That's going to be the tricky one. Looks like I'm going to have to get to more shows. I can already see that I might not want to leave this set out which is negating the original idea. Well, maybe I'll live a little and leave it out anyway.
You betcha ! Yep. And that became an issue for me. As you pointed out, it defeats my purpose of the hobby - enjoyment. So I bought 10 coin easels cheap on E-Bay, and every week I pull some stuff out of the safe and have a "theme of the week". Right there on my bedside table. This week, it's silver dollars. Last week, "odd denominations". I don't feel that leaving coins in my temperature controlled, 40% humidity house for a few days will destroy 'em if they're in low humidity 95% of the time.
I was thinking of doing a type set also and putting it in a Capitol Plastics holder to sit on my desk here at home. I cant find anything from Capitol thats made to hold a Quarter Type set but maybe you can get one custom made. Good luck!
I stopped at a coin shop today (not so local) and picked up a basic Whitman, plastic quarters holder. It holds 5. I plan on customizing it by adding a stand on the back to hold it up. So, I'm going to drop off the heraldic quarter. I'm only going to put a capped bust, liberty seated, barber, standing and a 98 Washington in it. This is fine for me. I want to do this without sinking too much into it. I'm really not dying to collect these but I do want to do this, like I said, to have them to look at. I was able to pick up a few more MS Franklins for the album as well.:thumb:
Or a couple of coin easels will do nicely ! Cheap, easy, non-invasive. http://shop.ebay.com/items/_W0QQ_nkwZcoinQ20easelQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZR40QQ_mdoZ (I'm starting to sound like a coin easel salesman !) It seems whatever you do should facilitate enjoyning the coins' reverses as well.
Here it is for now On the left is my birth year proof set. On the right is a 1909VDB with nice luster and a 1909 IHC. Just got both from Arizona Jack. Until I find/buy an 1838, I decided to put a 1932 Washington in. The last one is a BU 98 Washington. The SLQ is pretty decent. Probably cleaned. The 1916-D could be better but I decided to live with it for this. I'm very happy with the seated. Full Liberty is sharp on the shield. A great deal of feather detail left on the eagle. Two parallel streaks on the back (maybe from a machine?) but don't detract from it at all.
I have all of my buffalos out on display. I got a bag of nodates and glued them all to the top of my coffee table. Every other one alternated heads and tales. After a couple coats of varnish, it's solid as a coffee tables needs to be. It's great to spread out the newspaper and read it on top of all those buffs. I had a guy offer me $1,000.00 for it. I said no thanks but I'll make you one just like it for $1,500. He said ..sure. I'm now buying up all the no date buff I can find...lol.
