How much is this coin worth? the 1881 gold $5.00 half eagle? I was looking over a coin book and saw it for $20,000. Why are there others for a lower price? what tells the expensive one apart from the cheaper ones on ebay?
Howdy federicom03 - Welcome to the Forum !! The value of a coin is largely dependent on its condition. That's why one is worth $200 and another $20,000.
well its been practically stored for over 50 years in a safe. rarely touched. Would it help if i post a picture of it? Its very very clean and has sharp letters and nothing is worn out. I was also told that it depends where it was stamped? Delaware, Penssylvannia or Maine? It has a P which i assume pennsylvania
Yes !! A picture woulld be most helpful. And you are right, the mint mark is important also. But I've never heard of a mint in Delaware or Maine.
I dont know if its delaware or maine i just know they can either have a P a D or an M i think?! ill take a picture and post it up whats ur email?
No problem about the mint marks - post your pics. If you have any problems feel free to email me the pics and I'll post them for you gdjmsp@qwest.net
The pictures would help, greatly. I have several of these gold coins, from 1879-1888-S. I hope you have one of the true gems. I believe they are yet common (the ones not melted down for bullion). The date of issue from the mint isn't enough to go on, is there anything else that makes this coin a rare coin? There are many thousands that are still almost in pristine condition, but what is it that makes your coin special? Other than the sweet sweet GOLD? Give us more to go on, we may be able to help you determine its value in present-day markets. Hope you will post some pics. Sincerely, Ali Al-Hazen.
I will post some pics. I need some time though because the coin is under a safe and the person that knows the combination, is out of the country. I really want to know if this coin is one of the "real gems" u say. thanks for helping me out
It appears that the hot number in the 1881 $5 gold coins is the 1881cc, with only 13,886 shown to be minted.
Look at these pictures - Click Here See the CC under the eagle on the reverse - that's how you'll know.
Yes of course - I posted the pic of the '71-CC because they don't have a pic of the '81. But they will look the same. I mainly wanted you to be able to see where the CC was on the coin as well as see what the coin itself is supposed to look like. If it looks any different - then it may not be genuine. That's why we wanted to see pics of your coin - to judge the condition and to see if it looks authentic. There are probably more fakes out there than there are real coins.
Ok thanks! im gonna take the pictures tomorrow friday. I dont think theyre fake. I had over 20 of these coins well, my family and sold them for 4000 dollars each like 20 or so years ago. ill post pics tommorrow
Appears to be 1881 with no mint mark. Does not appear to have wear on high points, has mint luster, but lots of abrasions on the front of the coin. Looks like it might grade MS60 tops. Top value shown for MS60 for this coin looks like $240. However, with all the dings and marks on the front, it may not bring that from a collector and for sure not from a dealer. Now lets hear some gold experts comment on this coin!
Well--To me it looks BU...I see a little bit of rub here and there so I would say BU (MS60)....I'm not good at grading gold coins so I might be way off- It is a 1881-P and I would guess that value at or around $300.00 Now again...I'm not good at grading gold coins so I could be wrong. Speedy
I would say the coin would grade at MS62 or MS63. But it is very hard to grade a coin based on pictures. In MS62 grade the coin would be worth about $250 to $300. In MS63 the value could go as high as $700. But this is assuming that the coin was graded & slabbed by NGC or PCGS. If you were to sell the coin raw I think you would be lucky to receive $200.
