This thing has many clash marks all over both sides. I'm wondering if the line going thru the date is a clash or a die crack. It may line up with the bottom of the letters in the word STATES. If anyone has an overlay, please post it. I thought it was a crack but now I'm not sure. The images are really large if you click on them.
Cool clash! I believe the answer to your question is that the line through the date is clash marks from ATES. You can see the space between TE inside the upper loop of the 8.
Agree it’s a clash. You can actually see the 8 and the 5 clashes over STATES on the reverse. Very cool.
The issue with this overlay the series had 7 obverse styles,and 3 reverse its to busy to see what being asked.
Larry your specimen is an 1854 MPD -002 Misplaced date in denticles the top of the 8 below the 5. In ms 63 it's an $500 coin. Paddy
Larry here are my thoughts... Going on my references I can tell you for a fact that it is an 1854 arrow mpd 002 In the condition I say unc. The value of the variety plus the clashes makes this coin value above the current value for the variety. That value to be determined by seller / buyer. Now here's where the rubber meets the road....I have no reference for that heavy clash variety. References give no Valentine # my attribution is an Valentine #2a
Gets better the coin it is double dated from the clash once correctly the other backwards 4581 see image.
Also Larry you asked about the line the goes though the date....in Valentine it is refered to as a die crack. .....at which one point before this die got so heavily clashed it was believed to be a crack as it is pretty heavy clashed. Did not @C-B-D Just sell one simular? Found it and earlier die state of the V-2a mpd 002 pictured above, John said it sold for around $300. Nice find.
Yeah I do wish there were other over lays for all the dies styles designs. That would make life much eaiser since these are so small to see.
Thank you @Paddy54 Great information. I bought it from Bowers about 30 years ago because of the strong clash. That was my passion in those days. He called it a 62. I was at AU something. Early PCI, green label, gave it a 55.
