Earlier this year I posted a really bad image of a tetradrachm of Caracalla, Tyre Mint. Here are better images. The hair style is unusual. Instead of the closely cropped hair that one usually sees, his hair in the example has a distinct flow towards the back of his head, much in the style of Alexander III's coinage, albeit the style on this coin is crude in comparison. There is a spot of apparent corrosion above the portrait, and that area is missing legend and possibly other detail. However, if you look at the hair above the forehead, it is distinctly shown as raised and wavy, as is sometimes depicted on Alexander III's tetradrachms and drachms. Further, there could be suggestions of an upper part of a lion's mouth, again quite crude and somewhat ambiguous. There is a bow at the back of his head. Is it part of a wreath or is it just standing by itself? Caracalla had an obsession of Alexander III. Could this coin from Tyre be a product of that obsession? What do you think?
