That's correct. I come across them in my change multiple times per week actually. These zinc pennies are terrible. If they were trying to create biodegradable coins, they accomplished their objective with the penny. Total garbage unless you get a proof or something very close to it. When I started looking at my change closely roughly a year ago, I noticed many pennies which had cracks along the letters, dates, and even the images on both sides. The cracks in most cases exposed the shiny silver zinc inside. The very first time I came across one like this, I really thought that it was special for that specific reason. After being on this site and learning quite a bit, I've come to realize that it's just a terrible zinc penny. They don't age well, especially in circulation.
Thanks, yes it comes down to money. Zinc is a very malleable metal probably more so than copper and fairly corrosive resistant. But i’m Sure the mint could come up with a fairly cheap alloy to meld with it to improve the minting process, don’t know if there’s been a push for it or not. But one things for sure nothing happens fast in the Gov’t. I think i’ve Already learned something about error coins and that a lot of people spend a lot of time and effort to find a “treasure” nothing against them but I think i’ll Stay with what I like. Thanks again all
