I found this coin in a bank roll a while back and finally got a microscope to look at it. I initially thought it was a proof, but I am unsure due to the lack of reflective surfaces. The nickel has what looks like full steps, and a decently high grade. Is there any value to this coin? Its definitely a keeper for me either way. 20200430_210918.jpg 20200430_210931.jpg 20200430_211001.jpg 20200430_210730.jpg 20200430_210655.jpg

Nice looking especially for its age. Not a FS and not a proof. Not worth the cost to grade. Excellent to keep.

I don't think it would grade full steps. But, it definitely is worth more than the 5 cents you bought it for. Nice find.

@Collecting Nut @gronnh20 Thank you guys! I have a very similar condition war nickel and '67, but the steps on those are not as defined as this one, as well as about 30 BU '55s. Someone must have dumped a collection.

FYI....A FS can not have any interruption of the steps. Period. The slightest ding or wear can be detrimental to a FS.

  7. Pretty coin don't think it's a proof but still a keeper in my books

I did not know that! Thanks for the info! In that case, im assuming fresh out of the mint, it possibly used to be full steps?

Struck by a worn die which shows mushy soft details on the coin. There are a few signs of minor circulation. It has a number of bag marks (small cuts or scrapes.) I don't think was ever a FS but it was and is close.

Nice find! I keep far worse looking '50's nickels, and that one would find a spot in an album or flip for me for sure!

I finally got this coin back from PCGS (I had free vouchers left over from my last batch of coins) and this turned out to be a proof! Was was really hoping for that FS grade lol

    So it graded PR58?

As an aside, neither PCGS or NGC recognize full steps on circulated Jefferson Nickels so if you thought it was circulated, you probably shouldn’t have submitted it. That said, the other collectors who were saying this coin wasn’t full steps were being very conservative. Not only does it look full steps to me, it looks 6 full steps which is a dead giveaway that the coin was a proof. You just don’t see 6 full steps on 1957 nickels very often.

Edited to add: I just checked the NGC census and they have only graded one 1957 Jefferson with 6FS, it is an MS66 6FS.

Yeah its PR58. Oh well still glad I sent it in. Was only $11 with the leftover voucher, but it's something I found myself so regardless of the value I'm proud of it c:

Also I sent with it the 1943D I found in an older post. Was praying for that 5FS but sadly it didnt make the cut. Still proud of this one too though! cert_39047165_trueview_195655565_Max.jpg

    Late to the party.
My feeling was impaired proof because of the quality of the steps even though not full. You don't get that on business strikes from that period. So I figured the 1957 Philly was a proof.

Yeah, that 43-D has a significant bridge above the “T”. What did that grade? MS65?

Both PCGS and NGC are tough on the 43-D because of how common they are, both in high grade and full steps.

Only graded 63 sadly. Sent a 1967 with it too. Identical steps and grade

Like I said, they are tough on the 43-D and if the luster isn’t there, it won’t get a gem grade.

Yeah I'm still learning these things lol. I originally got the pcgs platinum to send in a few errors to get attributed and still had vouchers left. I didnt realize vouchers didnt cover errors. I got 6 more left after my last submission. I'm still new to collecting and all of my experience has come from coin roll hunting so far. I've managed to pick up quite a bit of nice 1940-1960s coins, along with a 1987P cud (in profile picture), a nice lamination, some clipped planchets, and a broadstrike. All in all it's been a great learning experience so far but I still have a long way to go
