My son and i are new at coin collecting.I ordered a catalog from Coast To Coast coins, and also found some advertisements in different magazines.I would like to order him some items for Christmas, but do not want to spend a lot of money, but would also like something authentic. He's looking at some Morgan dollars, and also would like the commemorative piece for the twin towers, among other things.I know that there may be countless answers to this question, but we would be very thankful for any help.

    Thanks again,Hunter & Keith

As green stated, the larger companies are usually rip offs. Some people here sell coins try the auction listings. Also try a local coin shop if you have one near.

If you are just getting started out I would suggest buying coins graded and slabbed by PCGS or NGC until you learn more about collecting. You can find nice deals on ebay but do your homework first. Check the sellers feedback, do a completed listing search to see what the coin you are looking at has been selling for. Becareful buying raw coins until you have learned how to grade them yourself. Good luck!

Check for coin shows in your area.

You've gotten some good advice already. The Twin Towers "coin" isn't really a U.S. coin.
And I think its a rip-off. If you and your son continue to collect, I'd advize you to stick around here. You'll learn alot, including how to not get ripped off.
    Welcome!

Don't forget to check out what Coin Talk's advertisers have. I regularly drool over the stuff in Sedwick's catalog, for example. ApacheCoin.com is a good source for small cents (Lincolns, Indians, etc.). Also look at davidlawrence.com.

BTW - You can tell your advertisers that they have definitely made sales with me at least with advertisements on this site.

I hate the ebay listings though, FWIW.

I have heard that Coast to Coast does clean alot of their coins. But I'm sure that they're not the only ones, not by a long shot. You have to be very careful who you buy from, thats why its been suggested that you stick to buying slabbed coins to start with until your eyes are trained to spot problem coins. Find a good honest reputable dealer and build a relationship with them. I'll always recommend http://www.reedededge.com/
    and
    apachecoin.com - http://02a7097.netsolstores.com/
Also if you're looking for coin supplies here is the place to go.....http://www.jpscorner.com/

I've been having decent luck at apmex.com with bullion... but I can only speak to bullion (Maple Leaves, Eagles, Krugerrands, etc.).

Coast to Coast ( Ken Pines ) was evicted from the ANA for deceptive advertising and selling junk.

In fact, beware of and stay away from all the big multi page advertisers in CoinWorld and Numismatic News, nothing but trouble will be found there.....

Don't forget to look into some of the beggining collectors books. I have an eight year old daugter who really enjoys coins. Some of the best times we spend together are looking through a bunch of old wheats. A fun one that my she enjoyed was Coin Collecting for Dummies. But just about any book on collecting is a start. I can't stress enough how important knowlege of what you are doing is. It will keep you from getting ripped off as well as expand your brain. If you stick around here long enough you will hear this all the time in one form or another. "LEARN BEFORE YOU BUY".
As for a good place to buy I have always had good luck with www.coinbug.com
