Use my scientific method. Flip it, you know, like flipping a coin. If it rings, it is copper.

    Hi,
So if the 1982 penny makes a ringing sound then it is the variety penny?
    Thanks,
    SM

    Check the wieght

The copper cents from 1982 weighed in at 3.11 grams and the zinc weigh in at only 2.5.

That works too. :D I don't have a scale so I "flip a coin". Probably not the most accepted method but it works

Even if you can't weigh it for a measurement, you might be able to compare it to a pre-1982 and a post-1982 cent using the ruler and fulcrum method someone here suggested previously. Your only problem might be precision, since the difference is so small.
