Yeah, it was a good day in Dubuque, Ia. They had a coin show going on at the greyhound park & casino, and on the other side of town there was a gun show. We hit both. :D

Here's some of what I brought home:

I ended up trading in a few common "O" Morgans on this Peace dollar. I've been wanting a nice 1935 and this was a nice one. The reverse looked well struck to me. They were selling it well below Red Book.

I picked up a 1955 MS Franklin for the album. There was a 54-S I wanted next to it but by the time I got back around to the guy, the 54-S was gone. :(

Got this 37-S quarter for $2.50. Not the greatest condition but I'm sure this was the cheapest one in the place. I only saw one more for several hundred dollars.

Bought a BU Alaska quarter for my one album since they were there and finally I got this 1910-S Barber half just because I wanted a Barber. Nothing special. I looked for all the key dates that have been talked about here but, I really found out why they're key dates. They weren't there! Very few of the key Barbers around.

My cousin bought a 4 oz. silver $100 dollar bill for $65.00, which I thought was pretty good. (They were selling for over 120.00 on ebay two months ago.)
At least there was a sign of bullion coming down. He got some more silver too. Negotiated the guy down to 12.50 but that was it, for just plain rounds. That took a lot of haggling. He said at 12 he'd be losing money. That was bottom dollar. I picked up some silver at 15.00 and that guy had to think about it for 5 minutes, like I was killing him.

I very nearly purchased a BU 1893 Columbian half with amazing blue toning around the rims. The dealer wanted 100 dollars for it. I talked to him a few times. Then I came back later. I said I'll give you 80 for it, thinking maybe he would deal. He then rudely says, "No you won't!". So I was like "ooook!!" I walked away. It's a shame because I really wanted it but, oh well. He said if I was buying a thousand of them he'd consider a 20% discount. Ok, whatever. Too much available to put up with B.S. opinions. I hope he took it back home.

All in all, the selection was overwhelming. Very hard to choose. A lot of people there and a lot of buying going on from what I saw. Small room but 40 dealers packed in tight.

BTW, the Franklin has got to be REAL close to FBL. The dealer didn't even talk it up as such but they are very pronounced. I should try to get a better pic.

Nice bunch of coins. What'd you pay for the '35 Peace $? That is a MS63 isn't it?

I went to a local show a couple of weeks ago and was looking for a '35. One was in a 2x2 cardboard flip marked MS63. It certainly wasn't. He wanted $78 I offered $60 telling him it looked like a very weak strike, figuring he'd go down a bit. He said "All Peace dollars have a weak strike" an didn't drop the price. I left.

The next one I saw had a deep bag mark (gouge) right at the corner of her eye. It was so distracting I couldn't buy it even after coming back to look again. I left the show without any coins.

I see your experience was fulfilling. That's great. You got a variety of coins you wanted to fill spots in your collection. That's what a good coin show is for.

Yes it's a MS-63. I have another one that's loose as well but this one has a much better strike on the reverse and much cleaner. They were selling this for 120.00. NGC prices them at 125.00. I traded in a few Morgan dollars on it and ended up paying an extra 5 dollars to cover it. The Morgans were slabbed but commons. The '35 came out of a case with about 300 slabbed silver dollars stacked on top of each other.

I found so much I wanted but there's only so much you can do, dollar wise. Some of the coins in the cases were just incredible. A guy hardly has enough time to take it all in. I could have stayed all day but we had to get to the other show as well and the guy I was with was somewhat on a schedule.

Some nice coins there. Aren't coin shows fun? I usually go to about 2 to 4 a month but due to health, only about 1/month lately. You know your going to to many when dealers ask where have you been lately.

Thanks. Yeah, they are fun. It's been a long time. There's a huge difference between trying to decipher pics on ebay and actually being able to see thousands up close and personal. Allows you to get a much better feel between original and problem coins. At the verge of buying, I passed on a couple that probably would have looked really good on ebay.

Glad you had a good time. Looks like you picked up a nice variety of coins. :thumb: I wish I could have made it but as it turns out I was more than a little bit busy over the weekend.

There is a show coming up in early Dec in Iowa city though, with any luck I can make that show.
