Most of the remaining coins are bullion and very low mintage stuff it is holding up well.

The Paper Money collection is doing quite well....

Lost 30% from portfolio and still going down........... Coins? who knows. The problem with coins is you need a buyer. With this economy, not many buyers out there. Bullion is much easier to liquidate.

Pawn shops are thriving now, people are selling everthing. Open a pawn shop.

Rickie, you can not afford to die,, please wait until the government gives you the ok.

    Some people.... geez..

I havent a clue as to how my coin profit is doing, not something that I track or really even interested in at this point in my life. I am a coin collector, not a coin investor. Now if your talking about my investment portfolio. I hate to see my next statement. I am sure I have lost well into 6 figures.

Sitting good here, Ford up 25%, GM up 33% on my " gamble " buy last Friday. I may out today and take the quickie money, it will add 3 feet to my boat.

    Silver? I'm dead...I bought at $14
    Gold? I'm dead....bought at $840

Coins? Have been watching the bay and heritage, see softening for sure. Many keys are going soft and some just plain unsold at prices well below what they were doing 2 months ago.

Then again, I got outbid on 5 coins this week with strong bids..........betterdate/grade semi's under $250

Luckily, I was mostly out of stocks and very long in cash and gold before the crash. That said, I lost many, many tens of thousand of dollars in the recent stock pullback, and I'd rather not be more specific that that.

How do we recover? For me, personally, it is continuing to dollar cost average purchasing of stocks, and moving a bunch of cash back into the market once a bottom has been reached. My movement from cash to stock has already begun, partially, as a week ago today I bought a number of shares in both IBM stock and select stock market index mutual funds. Time will tell if that was a bottom, or just a stop on the way down.

Regardless, diversification is key at this point in time, and anyone with all their eggs in one basket should be very careful unless their time horizon on their investments is very long.

    Respectfully...MIke

p.s. I don't view coins as an investment, and I've not sold any recently, so I can't really answer that part of Elaine's question, but my sense is that my coin collection hasn't lost much value (certainly not as much as stocks).

by the way, i forgot to tell you guys how much i lost on stocks. on oct.10,2008 closing. i decreased somewhere around $102,000.00. but today around 2 p.m. i recovered some 22,000.00. on aug.31,2008. i did not lost anything at all. see how fast the market went down.

Selling only establishes a tax liability and has nothing to do with gains and losses.

I don't consider the short term moves to be important.

I could care less what my coins are worth. I collect coins with discretionary income. If they go up in value, great. If not, well that's great also.

    stock market gradually improving

stock market will gradually improve as government support it. the funny thing is that they predicted the oil will come down to $50.00 per barrel.

My stock in Crocs went down, and I'd lose about 60% of my investment if I sold it now. I'm hanging on though, because I expect when the economy turns around, they'll recover... their financials still look good and while their sales are lower than they used to be, they're not losing money! I'm even buying more of their stock; their stock is at a bargain price, if you have faith that it will eventually go up again.

The few gold coins I own actually went up in value, probably. Gold's still really high and a shaky economy actually helps the value of gold.

No idea about the rest of my collection; I don't intend on selling any of it anyway. Just like stock, you only lose something when they value of what you own drops if you sell it. I guess it's likely its value went down on paper, but that doesn't mean anything if I don't intend to sell it. My coin and paper money collection is a collection for its own sake; it's not an investment!

If anything I plan to take advantage of the lower prices on some coins now to add to my collection while it's cheaper than usual.

    Amen to that!
