On this site's sister forum about antiques, Antiquers, we have lots of newbie Etsy sellers join to ask questions about their items. They generally know next to nothing about Numismatics and I've had to politely inform a few of them that their pocket change was not worth $$$$. I've gotten a variety of responses and many are stunned that a cent from 1930 isn't particularly rare or worth a ton of money in the collecting world.

The responses I got back had many curse words I can't mention and "mind your own business".. I don't bother sending messages anymore. It doesn't matter because their coins never sell anyway :bored:

I've gotten that a few times but it helps when they are coming to a forum requesting help and are willing to admit that something is wrong due to their listings continuing not to sell. Unfortunately occasionally a Etsy listing for a $0.03 Wheat Cent does occasionally sell for $50 to a particularly gullible buyer and if it happens once it reaffirms these people's mindset that their pocket change is worth big money.

The one thing I noticed on Etsy is that these businesses come and go in a short period of time or they continue this "space fantasy" selling with no buyers. Apparently, they have friends, family members, etc. put those "baited" rating of the coin being in 10 or 20 people's cart. They do have sellers that sell only slabbed coins by the three TPGS's and the novice can compare to other sellers outside Etsy. However, these scams like I posted on continue to come and go. I have seen some sellers on Etsy talking about the counterfeit coins that they say have been increasing.

That's a sound business model - buy low, sell very high - two or three sales a year is all it takes

I don't have that many but I have been distributing them to the grand kids. And, I was being sarcastic. But, you know that. Nice batch you have.

I wish I could sell high. If you buy it from the US Mint you can be sure that it will lose value in short order.

I agree. Lots of hobby and part-time sellers on that platform many of which never appear to sell much merchandise. Kind of like antique mall sellers, the majority of whom do it for a bit of income in retirement and the social aspects of being a "reseller/antique dealer". Definitely a hard business to break into since many are happy to break even or even lose a little each month.

Let alone the fact that it's hard to explain to people that their map filled with 50 quarters is worth 50 quarters.
