I was privileged today to be invited to the monthly meeting of the Ancient Society of Washington club meeting now held on Zoom for obvious reasons. When I lived in the DC area I had served as Consul in the club and really missed the meetings after I moved from that area. The meeting went well considering most had little or no Zoom experience. One member gave a talk on Roman Republican coins using Powerpoint and the Zoom Shared screen option. I need to see if I can figure out that system. What other ancient coin clubs are using Zoom?
Never heard of this group (and I even lived in DC for a while) but the idea's pretty cool about using Zoom. You don't really need a geographical location to start one of these come to think of it, just a shared interest. Rasiel
A Chicago society is using Webex - they had one meeting a few weeks ago - in over a hundred years they hadn't missed a meeting, so it went ahead over Webex (similar to zoom, but more corporate-y). In Ireland, we had a Numismatic Society of Ireland committee meeting using Zoom and we may use it for regular monthly meetings - in parallel with the in-person meetings probably, when they can restart, hopefully in the Autumn. We're a national society but have all our meetings in Dublin, so there are many members who can't attend and this should be a good way of reaching more of them. ATB, Aidan.
This came up today. There are many past members who once lived in DC and were active in ANSW but who now live elsewhere and might like to participate online even when the face-to-face meetings can resume for those in a convenient driving distance. It also would be possible to recruit programs from recognized experts in some field without having to pay their airfare from half way around the world. I do not claim to have the computer/online/Zoom savvy to make all this happen but those who have grown up learning how to function in the 21st century need to get on top of this matter.
That's pretty cool. I would enjoy hearing what they had to say, though I am not a proponent of Zoom (too many security flaws).
This is a good idea, Doug, and one that I may steal and suggest at the next meeting We occasionally fly someone in from the UK and put them up for a night or two to talk to us and this would be less of a commitment for the speaker and cheaper for us. As they, the possibilities are endless! As for dragging us into the 21st century - as one of the two youngest and therefore assumed tech-savvy members (we're both over fifty, so no spring chickens), I was nominated to set up the Zoom meetings. My colleague has set us up with a WhatsApp group, which hasn't had a single message so far ATB, Aidan.
Not ancient, but the Glendale coin club did their monthly meeting over YouTube. Yesterday's ANS Money Talk was done over Zoom. Interestingly, both had higher attendance than typical meetings. Both of my local clubs (FtW and NETCC) are looking into it.
I attended a virtual meeting of our local astronomical society last night via Zoom. The topic was Apollo 13 discussed by an ex-NASA official who was involved in the recovery of the mission.
