Hey guys. I am new to the forum and thought this would be a good topic to start off with. I found this error coin and am not exactly sure how to classify it or if it has much value. I have noticed a few coins that were off center but this one is more so then others I have seen. Please help me upraise it and classify it. Thanks for your time. Larry
Welcome to Coin Talk, Larry. :welcome: If the reverse shows the same offset, you would have an off center cent. If only one side shows this offset, you have a coin struck with a misaligned die. Either way, I don't see a coin with any added value. Keep up the hunt! ETA. There are 3 dies used to strike a coin. The obverse, reverse and collar dies. A broadstruck coin is one struck without the collar die. The collar die restricts the spread of the planchet during striking. A broad struck coin would spread out beyond the diameter of a normally struck coin.
If the other side is the same it could be an uncentered broadstrike at best, not an off-center. To be an off center part of the design has to be missing. It also needs to be examined to see if the collar was in place. If the collar was there it isn't a broadstrike even if both sides are off like that. I suspect this is most likely just a mis-aligned die.
Sorry, just one cent. Keep looking, though. There are errors and varieties still out there to be found.
Lol thanks. Still gunna save it because its different. Even if its worth 1 cent. But I have mounds of pennies to look through so ill keep you guys posted
My name is Jason and I have a 1973 offset penny with a ridge in the edge. I would like to know if there is any value to this penny? It doesn't have a mint mark on it. Please let me know.
Without seeing it, my initial impression is it is worth 1 cent. This opinion may change upon seeing it.
