My coin collection is all over the place. I started seriously collecting coins after years of owning just gold and silver bullion. Well, the problema is that I have quarters, morgans, peace dollars and cents and a whitman quarter album i'm working on. Btw~ I also have some war nickels and barber coins. My collection is all over the place! Should I try to stick to one type of coin or is ok to be all over the board like this? thanks in advance~ Hazard Joe
Joe - of course it's "okay" to be all over the place.....that sounds like me! Collect what you like! I've found that if I fall out of love with something, I'll sell it and then have more $ for things I really want.
YOu do whatever makes you happy! I am all over the place as well. However, I am begining to think I would be happier accomplishing goals that I have set. Maybe I'll do a typeset. Best wishes on your collecting.
You should see my coins, Wheaties everywhere, Mint sets, Proof I am all over. I do want to collect mintsets and proof, Silver and maybe gold coins. Cheryl
I was the same way in the beginning and finally narrowed it down but the area I picked is very diversed so it didn't help much but now I have a goal to reach. :thumb: Ribbit
Joe, I'm sort of the same as you.. I have been working on a type set for a while, but I keep digressing... so I settle on "short sets"within a given type... like, Washington quarters from 1932-1940, dimes 1940-45, Walkers 1916-1921. I like having a group of coins of a single style, but lack the focus or the funds for a complete date run. And I didn't start to talk about the foreign stuff, like those cool Weimar coins, or some of the Central/South American stuff....stop me before I buy again!!
it's been proven (at least in my travels) that collecting isn't the best investment around. it's a hobby so collect what excites you. i hate having too many duplicates of the same coin in different dates. i buy for the art.
My suggestion is, find a set you like...and slowly work on it.. every now and then, I buy a few frankies for my set....then it's back to buying coins on my ancient want list, then back to frankies, then to anceints, then a few more frankies..Then a few US coins for the type set, then to ancients...ET. It's okay to buy all over the place, just make sure you know what you are doing...I have learned the hard way. stainless
You don't need help man. You need encouragement! So far aside from collecting bullion, I've bought my birth year proof set (the only proof set I own), I'm collecting the silver state quarters proof set and regular MS state quarters set (both almost done), I've completed a (mostly BU) Kennedy halves set 64 through 2008 P&Ds, about a third of the way with my MS Franklins set, started a rough Buffalo nickels set, mainly collect commemoratives, but also will buy the occasional, Morgan, Peace, two cent piece, gem 1964 quarter or whatever catches my eye! I'm all over the place too. I don't feel bad about it. Sometimes I just don't feel like getting anything for a set and would rather buy a nice 1935 Peace dollar or something. I think I'd get bored with it if I didn't spread the collection out over different areas. There's too many cool coins to pass up.
I'm kind of all over the place as well. For lack of a better way to describe it I have 2 collections. My "Real" collection is composed of the sets that I've finished or am actively working on. Right now I'm only actively working on a MS63+ Roosevelt set. That set is in an album on my bookshelf along with my Lincoln Cent, Liberty Nickel, Barber dime, Washington Quarter, Peace Dollar, and Ikes (which are all complete). My "Other" collection is stored in a filing cabinet. I have a drawer for cents, another for nickels and dimes, another for quarters / halves / dollars, and the last drawer is for foreign / proof sets / mint sets. When I run across something which I'm not "Really" collecting but I know is a good buy, or something that I know I could sell on eBay for a profit I put it in my other collection. Then when I finish up a set in my "Real" collection I look through my "Other" collection and take stock of the situation. If something jumps out at me as being neat, that's what ends up becoming the next part of the real collection. I haven't taken inventory of what's in the filing cabinet in a while. I suspect once I've finished the Roosies I'll be starting a Barber Half collection as I know I've got 20 or 30 different ones sitting in there (some semi-keys) and I know I like Barbers (had a blast completing the Dimes). But then I also know I've got about 3/4's of the IHC collection finished sitting in there, and I have at least two complete circulated Jefferson sets (I'd like the "Real" one to be FS), etc... Long story short if you asked me what I was currently collecting I'd say Roosies, BUT I'm constantly picking up stuff other than what I'm currently collecting.
I am definitely all over the place! And its just where I want to be! :thumb: I have a nice IKE collection which I spend the most time! After that its Washington's followed by Kennedy's. I have a little but of this and a little bit of that but I never entertain any thoughts of being the next Eliasberg. It would be nice but out of the question as I do not have the mental capability to truely appreciate each and every different coin that is available. I dread the day, if it ever comes, that I look at an XF-45 3 Legged Buffalo as simply..................... "inventory"!
it's not ok! someone can steal your coins easy!! you could sell some of your coins to buy a safe that's what i would do, and if you do i will buy some
Don't worry. My collection is packed in boxes and stuffed in different closets, under beds, in the basement and some stuff is in the hidden valut - safe room- I built. He who dies with the most toys -WINS! If they bury me with all my coins they will need to put me in a CSX box car.
Up, Down, left, right......I am all over the place too. I have had the same feelings as you...."shouldn't I slow down and concentrate on a specific year or set?" Then a coin will catch my eye and I can't help but buy it..lol!!!!!! I have a couple of sets I'm working on but for the most part...I'm all over the place!
No matter which way you go, you're going to wind up with quite a few duplicates and extras. I tried focusing on Lincoln Cents and wound up with 3 complete sets (less the 09SVDB) and 3 more partial sets just to put the extras somewhere. I saw assembling those sets more as a challenge than actual collecting - of course those might be the same thing. To some extent, collecting a full series - Lincolns, Morgans, or what have you - is hard to do. You might end up with a 95% complete collection with the remainder just out of reach, valuewise. It's a little discouraging to look at those empty holes, knowing you'll likely never fill them. And even if you do complete the set, you have a full book of 10-20, or whatever, coins that all look alike. I'm thinking lately that a type collection is the way to go. It's a lot easier to get a type coin, e.g., a high grade common date, than a low grade ultra rare coin to fill out a set. There are few coin series that you can't get a high grade single coin for a reasonable price. In the end, it depends on what excites you - full sets of one or two series, or one each of just about everything.
