Don't know anything at all about these tetradrachm's but been wanting one for a while. Hope I did ok on this one it is a Phillip II. I know nothing else about it.
I know @Al Kowsky knows a fair amount about these. I only know that they are from Syria, often Antioch, but sometimes other cities too. Nice pick up!
Nice pickup @bcuda. I love provincial tets, a lot of fun to collect these. Mine is similar with almost the same legends, but looks like a slightly different bust type. Philip II, AR Tetradrachm, (28mm, 14.1g), AD 249, Antioch, AYTOK K M IOYΛI ΦIΛIΠΠOC CEB, Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind /Rev. ΔHMAΡX EΞOYCIAC YΠATO Δ, Eagle standing left, head left, tail right, wings spread, holding wreath in beak. ANTIOXIA SC in two lines below. Prieur 473 (CNG E-Auction 463)
bcuda, Congratulation on your 1st handsome Tet of Philip II ! The coin is in Choice Ex Fine condition & has lovely toning. Your coin is listed in McAlee's book as 1043, & that could be found in Prieur's book as 473. I noticed Shea 19 has a handsome Tet of Philip II posted too as Prieur 473, which is a mistake or typo on his part. I can't imagine CNG making a blunder like that . Your coin would date AD 248/9.
Shea19, Your coin is listed in McAlee's book as 1045(b), & Rare. The bust type on your coin is more than "slightly" different, it's totally different. Your bust of Philip II is seen from the front, & bcuda's bust of Philip II is seen from behind.
Nice one, @bcuda ! I only have one of his mom: Otacilia Severa, 244-249. Roman provincial AR tetradrachm, 12.23 g, 25.1 mm, 7 h. Syria, Seleucis & Pieria, Antioch ad Orontem, AD 245. Obv: ΜΑΡ ΟΤΑΚΙΛ CΕΟΥΗΡΑ CΕΒ, diademed and draped bust, right. Rev: ΔΗΜΑΡΧ ΕΞΟΥCΙΑC ΥΠΑΤΟ Α, eagle on palm, left, tail right, SC in exergue. Refs: McAlee 1088; Prieur 341; BMC 541.
@Al Kowsky , thanks! That was a typo on my part, CNG listed this as Prieur 403, not 473. It was part of a group lot. I wrote down the wrong description for the coin. I unfortunately do not own the Prieur or McAlee references, so I appreciate the info.
Great Tet, @bcuda ! Congrats on your first of that denom! And VERY nice capture with fantastic detail... Ya dun goood, Maynard! My only Roman Philip II... Just don't get me started on the REAL Philip II RI Philip II 244-249 Nisibis Mesopotamia-farthest EAST Temple Tyche river god Mygdonius - sinister left
This one is the same as @ Alegandron's from Nisibia. The river god at Tyche's feet was named "Mygdonius". The coin weighs 10.32 g.
