argh. NOW that i have finally purchased the set, I am sure he market will tank on them :p

I will be cracking them out of their holders, I have a dansco album that needs them to be complete. Wish I would have purchased 20 of the sets in 99 :)

I will say that this is the hardest purchase i have made (coin wise) as i am NOT a big fan of modern coins. But I really DO NOT want to be an 80 year old man staring at blank holes in an album... and not having the $12,000 to purchase the set (never know...)

So why are these sets so expensive? just simple demand?

God, I can't imagine breaking open that or any proof set. You must know what you're doing by I wouldn't have the nerve. How was the '99' set when you got it? As neat, shiny, and beatiful as your other sets?
I'm new to this. I just received my 2008 Silver set and it is outstanding.
Glad you can complete your dreams. Quite an accomplisment. Congrats.:high5: zg

well, I don't have it n my hands yet. ordered it :)
I am sure it will be as perfect as all the others. The mint is getting really good at perfection these days.

My set is not actually completed, i still have a few sets to go. the 99 silver is the key though, so i just decided to get it out of the way. One of the best pieces of advice i received when it comes to coins is buy the keys first, they almost NEVER get cheaper.

cracking them out is really easy, you just give it a twist!
the most important part is to do it in a room that is nice and settled; no dust, no air.
I take a shower and do it naked and dry. no dust (serious here) I also use canned air to blow any dust out of my album before gingerly placing the coin in the album. never got a fingerprint or dust spot on one yet :)

the coins in my album are actually toning nicely! I couldn't be happier :)

I had one set and broke it open much like your doing. I luckily didnt have to pay todays prices for it but... now I should pick one up for my proof set collection as well. Generally I pick up several sets of each but in 99 things were looking bleak so I didnt. The set itself has about the same mintage of the 2001 set. I think being that it was the 1st year of the state quarter has kept the price where its at. Once that set of coins settles down from all the hype I think the set will drop down into the 150-200 range. At least thats what I am hopeing for. If not, then I will pass on paying 300 for it. Just not that important to me to have an extra set of them.

Too much information. My brain is frozen on an image of someone naked (and dry) cracking coins out of a holder.

GREAT!!! Now the value is going to tank! I guess it is time to sell off the 20 sets that I was holding onto. No point to keep them now that RanchHand has a set! ;) :p

Just joking BTW! I wish I had 20 sets. I always buy two sets from the mint every year just for this reason.

I do wonder what will happen to the 1999 silver set when the State Quarter program finishes... the $300 some price tags I've seen seem really overinflated for such a mass produced set. I think its inflated price reflects the "rookie card" syndrome in sports cards: the first card is always the most sought after. I can only assume something similar is happening here. But just look at the historical price of Barry Bonds rookies to see how the mighty can fall... :p

Hear ya Ranchhand. Bought the set last year (only set I hadn't ordered from the mint) after waiting for what I thought was a decent price. Paid it and a couple weeks later the price on the darn things drops $30. Go figure? Well, at least I got it.

Boy I hope so! I need to buy this set too. :D I feel your pain. I'm holding off on this and hoping for a drop. In all likelihood, I'll probably end up paying more down the road.

I can't be too mad at myself because I was out of the hobby at the time they came out. So it never even crossed my mind that they existed in 1999. Man that seems like a long time ago already. That was my first year in college. I still could have bought a few sets then. What a shame.

I like my coins with character :)

and yes, the price COULD come down... but it may not. It may go up like nuts.
Way to many times have I read stories about people waiting to buy keys for "the market to go down" and it just never seems to. If it does, I'll buy ten :)

Yea, I am not a huge fan of moderns, but I like commemoratives. I guess technically they are commemoratives :)

and relative to the classic commemorative series, they are cheap.

Uggh. Don't remind me! I was one of the last people to over pay for three of them. :goof: The sellers are probably still laughing now.

I doubt the value will tank. It may go down but in the long run I believe it will be a strong set.

Why the high price? I figure a few factors.

A lot of sets WERE broken up by larger dealers to slab the quarters and get ridiculous prices which the ebay public provided with gusto.
There were also problems with the mint that year. Dealers weren't allowed to buy any more than the average collector for a while. Not too good for dealers that do that for a living.

Soooo dealers started paying a premium to get them in inventory. I had friends selling theirs at $100 back then and loving it.
I held mine. I didn't have a lot of money to buy but I do still have my three sets.

Don't let the possibility of tanking bother you too much. The 01 and 02 sets did pretty well so I dumped my money into 20 03 sets. THAT set tanked big time! :(

You just never know and I haven't bought a mint product since 2006. Back to strictly the old stuff for me.

Why do people like toning? It is patina. Tarnish. Discoloration. Something that should lower its value. Not increase. Im not going to lie, some of them look cool, but the value shouldn't be increased. Its hard for me to tell if it is AT or NT though, so I stick to blast white coins. :D

I am missing 1999 and need to find the moolah to get it. Atleast I have the 2001.

It's not about the market price, but rather the whole reason why you collected the proof set- fuhgettabout the money, and cherish the collection!!

I am sure there are as many reasons as there are collectors.

In older coins, it shows originality. a lot of coins have been "altered" to make them look new, entropy is the way of all things. I prefer coins that have not been altered.

A piece of silver, to remain un-toned for any length of time, is not natural.

another random thought: want to destroy the value of an antique piece of furniture? refinish it. same thing with cars; original paint on collector cars is greatly desired. People want originality.

Another: some toning can be very pretty. people like pretty things.

    to each his own.

    :)
