Hi, i recently started collecting Newfoundland coins. I was intrigued by the low mintages coupled with the large coin collecting base in both the US & Canada. Do you collect Newfoundland coins & do you see a growing interest for them in the future?
Well, I do not collect, but I do have a newfoundland coin! A 1945 5cent piece. Only have it because my dad got it in Newfoundland on business last year for $2 CAN.
My book lists that coin with a mintage of 203,828. Priced at: VF-20($2), XF-40($4.00), MS-60($14.00). That coin is'nt real valuable, but still an interesting piece(low mintage also). I have quite a few modern NGC PF-70 nickels, i had planned to put them into multiholders. But with the economy slowing, plus i still need a couple more coins(Their not in multiholders yet, those are the reasons).
When I was there a year ago I was tempted to buy a set that tourist shops had. (But the quality was questionable).
We have a couple of them; it probably won't become a major part of either of our interest. But there are a few people I know around here who are keenly interested in collecting them. The province has quite the interesting history.
Absolutely! not only do I think these will go up in price shortly, but I buy them whenever I get the chance. I've been convincing myself and others around me to ''invest'' in newfoundland coins for the last 2 years... better be right. with such low mintages, ahd the rising prices of other more ''mainstream'' coinage, people are going to be looking for an inexpensive substitute while the high prices bowl over... shawn
Newfoundland coins are popular with serious collectors. i don't have the resources to compete for the high grade mint state coins, so i focus on the higher grade circulated coins that have excellent eye appeal. i almost have enough coins to make change for a $1.00 investing in Newfoundland coins makes sense, there always seems to be a market for these coins. -Steve
