As far as 60k minted, I don't have any idea what the guy would have been talking about.

    1943-P - 684,628,670
    1943-D - 217,660,000
    1943-S - 191,550,000

I did see an ebay seller talking about tons of the steel cents being dumped off shore one time though. That may be true.

In general, what annoys me is when dealers in any hobby have to act like what you own is garbage and everything they own is premium. Some people just don't know how to give it a break.

desertgem/vess1 thanks for comments. Someone said it, but is it true? Also, note the 60k mintage was for copper 1943 cents. I wouldn't think the price of those would be as high as they are if there were so many.

I just hate it when I go into the bank and ask for a roll of CENTS and they say,

    "A roll of WHAT?!"

Lots of things here are truely a little on the irritating side. As noted some of the so called professionals just can't help doing things as noted here. I've noticed so often when someone asks a question about a coin the very first thing those so called professionals say is "Not really worth much" You could be asking how many of a coin was minted and they would still have to throw that statement in.
I always wondered why people copy and paste items from Wikipedia. Obviously that must be their only source of info so if it's right, great. But if wrong, then what?
As to dumping tons of 1943 Steel Cents into the ocean 300 miles offshore. Anyone know which ocean? I wonder why 300 miles. What's out there? Could fish use them to buy things? I wonder if fish eat them. I've sure had some really bad tasting fish and that could be why. Rust. :goofer:
Ever notice the color of Salmon? Sort of Iron Rust color. :smile
As to what really bothers me there is basically nothing anymore. WAy to old to be bothered with anything. If someone says something that I feel could be corrected I may say something but if they insist on saying stuff like that, so be it.

I guess there is one thing that does sort of get to me. This constant scrolling on this web site. Still can't figure that out. No where else, just here. Bet it's a plot to get rid of us old people. :headbang:

Carl, I think at that time the legal limit of the US was 300 miles. So dumping them out there meant they were in international water. Why?? Maybe so no fish would be poisoned in the US.

I think the two main things that get my goat are already listed...the cent=penny thing is irritating....but then again I just dont like anyone who diverts from a thread or a discussion to come in an correct someone about something when they KNOW what they meant. If there is something having to do with the topic that is completely wrong, or somone is truely passing on bad info, thats fine. But someone comes in and asks about a penny and someone comes in, contributes nothing to the topic at hand, just came in to correct the person by telling them 'uh...the US doesnt mint a penny, they mint a one cent coin' ... You know what? get over it...you know what he was talking about. Its nitpicking and an attempt to make oneself seem like they know something...Its like correcting a person when he uses the wrong version of there, they're, their....you know he used the wrong form of the word, you see how he used it, and know what he meant...

That and the dealer who, even if I showed him an authentic Eid Mar will tell me 'Oh, Its not worth that much because (put a litany of reasons here) but I could probably give you...say...10 USD'

Sometimes I think dealers just think everyone is stupid and dont know the value of a coin or medal. I had a guy here contact me regarding a coin I posted here. Low ball the coin is worth 600 USD...I was asking questions about the text on the coin, maybe the guy thought I didnt know its worth as well, he offered me 200 USD for it...he might as well just have written a message to be calling me a moron.

anyone who disagrees with me is an annoyance.

After all, don't they realize that I know all.

[I learned that attitude from my mother-in-law, who actually does know everything. and my wife who learned it form her mother.]

Yes I agree. One of my favorite quotes is "If idiots could fly this place would be an airport" You can use that at so many political conventions. :goof:

just remember those people you are sure are idiots are probably convinced that YOU are an idiot. Nobody thinks they are an idiot, most people probably think they are pretty smart and 'get it'. IMO, people who label others idiots are probably no better than those they label and just dont see it because they are sure they are smart enough to make that call. :)

Of all the comments that could possibly annoy me, only about three do. The least of these is when you post a coin and the first thing someone says is: "Cool, but how much is it worth?" That's not the worst though, because I'm at least partly interested in value too.

But when someone insists on chastising my collecting habits because they aren't profit-maximizing... Oh lordy. I sat next to a coin investor once. He couldn't for the life of him understand why I preferred ancient, barbaric bronze to shiny, slabbed, MS-70 modern commems.

What gets me the most, however, is when someone posts a coin and I and other cointalk members comment on it, and they refuse to believe me/us! Ya, I may not have fancy pieces of plastic to put coins in, but I do know a thing or two. Especially when its corroborated by other members!

When i was married to my first wife,:( I used to buy a coin ever two months. There was one coin that i was interested in at the time , which i thought would be a good investment ,and for my collection a 1931 S cent a key coin XF. Well i did buy the coin and decided to show it to her, which I thought was a big mistake of my life. When she looked at the coin she said how much did you pay for it i said fifty dollar ,she replied how could you spend so much on a penny BRING IT BACK Man did that annoy me I divorced her immediatly ,and chosed the cent. TRUE STORY except for the divorce/ I didn't keep the penny after all it wasn't an XF so i brought it back to the dealer and Got my money back. I was kind of new to the Hobby than. I guess my wife was right after all, and she didn't even grade the coin.

I would like to say for the record that we have too many well adjusted individuals on this forum that just refuse to let the comments of others bother them. I am not one of those people. Here are the comments that annoy me.

    • Collectors who ask "Did I get a good deal on this coin"
    • Collectors who say to others "You paid too much for that coin"
    • And the most annoying comment is collectors that proclaim that a coin is AT but can't provide a reason why.
IMO, only investors should really worry about the first two comments for they accumulate coins for the sole purpose of making a profit. Collectors obtain coins because they enjoy the hobby. I don't know of any other hobby where people expect to come out ahead financially at the end of the day. If I buy coins and can get 80% of my money back, I am completely satisfied. I consider the 20% loss money spent on entertainment value that the hobby of coin collecting gives me. Most hobbies don't give you any value back. I will use golf as a perfect example. A golfer gets to play 18 holes. He/she does not get any money back when they are done the round. But the golfer loves the game and is content to spend that money on a activity that makes them happy. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a coin collector spending money on the opportunity to temporarily possess our little treasures. Remember, we will be gone, but our coins will still be there, hopefully in some other numismatist's collection

Regarding the AT/NT debate. It really bugs me when people with very little knowledge of toning proclaim a coin to be AT.

    OK, Rant over. :smile
