OK stainless, want to know why you won for what you think is a good price ? Then ask yourself this question - what did you buy ?

Did you buy the slab, or did you buy the coin ?

The pics on that auction are such that nobody could judge if the grade is accurate. The coin is in a slab by a company that most collectors have little confidence in, especially when it comes to moderns. There is no pic of the reverse at all, so how could judge if the coin is indeed FBL ?

You won at that price stainless because you bought the slab - not the coin.

The most telling words, maybe it's a wonderful coin.

    Stainless, let's see some images.

On the bright side, you didn't pay and arm & leg so it was probably a decent speculative buy.

.....well, it does have a 7 day money back guarantee in case stainless is disappointed. $10 gamble!

Dang, I thought ICG was one of the top 4 though?

Considering the price of silver alone, I think it was a good deal and possibly a great deal! :thumb: But I'm not as picky as others. ;)

    Ribbit :)

Ps: On the ICG question, my 1797 DBC I just got was in a ICG slab and it was noted it was corroded but not a peep about it being bent/damaged. So that left a sour taste in my mouth concerning them. ;)

Don't get upset about it. It wasn't a bad purchase. But it wasn't a steal as you first said. I think a lot of people would have taken a chance on it for $10, and the only mistake you made was not realizing you were taking a chance. Hopefully, you did well.

I skip all auctions where I can not see the coin - that includes PCGS, NGC, and ANACs. All three of them have slabbed some ugly coins. Now having said that - It may work out and for $10 who knows. I have a couple of ICG IHC's - not too bad as far as grading, but the higher the grade the more suspect they become. So I hope it works out - get some good pictures and let the experts(like speedy) see the coin. The most important thing to remember IS for you to be happy with it. If you get it and are happy with it then don't worry about what others think. In this case I think the coin will probably be MS, but not sure about the FBL. Don't let anyones comments bother you - it will always be a learning experience(now until you quit collecting). :)

    Silly wabbit! :D

But even w/the s&h you got some offset in melt and that's not a bad bid in the blind. Well, half-blind, as he was thoughtful enough to show you an obverse. But that might also suffice to explain why you were the only bidder on this "half-coin." ;)

IMO two things scared away bidders:
    -- the lousy image
    -- ICG

Only thing that could have been done about the image is request a better one. But that's a moot point now.

ICG has plenty of positive reputation to merit bidding on this coin AND expecting about what it's labeled (within one point) even with the lousy image.

My current opinion: Very good catch.

They are. But that doesn't change anything. stainless I wrote my respnse for one very important reason - so you would remember it.

Yeah I could have been nice and tactful about it, but would you remember it if I had ? Likely not. But people tend to remember things if you make a blunt and to the point comment.

When you first came here you bought just about anything. And when you posted the coins you bought other members would tell you why you shouldn't have bought that coin, remember that ? I know ya do because you usually don't do it anymore, you've made great progress.

But this purchase is falling back into your old ways and you don't want to do that. So remember my young friend - never bid on a coin in an auction if you can't see clear pics of both sides of the coin. Completely ignore any slab the coin may be in. And never forget that a cheap price does not make a good deal.

Stainless, ICG from what I have read, is probably considered in the lower part of the top 4 by most people. It is most likely a decent coin. For what you paid for it , I really do not see how you could have gone wrong. I paid more than that for a greasy burger , greasy fries and a cold one when I made a trip to the big city recently. This experience gave me indigestion so bad, I did not even go by the coin place. Sad thing about it, I was still hungry. I did not complain about the food because the waitress kind of scared me. She looked like she had about 30 lbs on me and sported a tattoo on her forearm.

I'm putting together a MS set and I would have looked at that page for maybe 2 seconds. Long enough to see there was one bad pic and no pic of the reverse and I would have moved on.

I don't know how ICG judges FBL's but I'm skeptical. If it indeed had great bell lines, the seller should have had a great big close up to show how good they are so he would get top dollar. Since he didn't, this would indicate he's hiding something. There isn't even a halfway decent pic of the obverse.

If an auction has a great pic of the obv. and no rev. pic, I skip it automatically. Even if an auction has 4 or 5 excellent close ups of both sides I have trouble. Most of the time I find something I just don't like about it. And I don't consider myself nearly as picky as many people I've seen on here.

Ok, thanks for the advice...I guess I can only hope to luck out and will learn from it.

Basically, you are right, I bought this coin because I took it for granted that it would be a MS-65 FBL...won't do that again.

That being said it will probably turn out to be a great deal. I mean it is a good risk for just $13.

7 Day return policy. No reason to assume he just went for the slab/grade. I've gotten tons of spot-on grades from ICG at great deals. This coin he bought could very well be a great looking coin, that ineeds has FBL worhy designation. If not, then hey, return it and look for a NGC or PCGS, or even ICG if your budget is tight.

So Stainless, good buddy, my advice is to just look for a year you want that has very good pics of the reverse if its going to be slabbed with an MS64/65 FBL label. If it's a coin you really want, then paying retail price shouldn't be too big of a deal; plus the '50s and '60s Frankies are pretty easily obtainable at afforable prices and with spot on grades with the coveted FBL designation (FOR HE MOST PART. we all knew these companies over/undergrade at times, nobody is perfect). So with all that in mind, look around and I bet you'll find dozens Franklins slabbed and with good grades. I personally don't like ones with album toning, or any toning at all. I look for the ones with nice clean fields with few scratches. Also, those bell lines HAVE to be readable for me if it's got the FBL label.

I acually have my eye on this gorgeous 1948 Frankie in a new PCGS holder with a MS64/FBL. I mean, this coin is going to cost about $110 or so I believe, but man oh man does it look great. I'm sure I can find one raw, but I really do like my coins slabbed.

So hey stainless, hope this helps, and PM if you have any other questions on that Lincoln :)

    Hey Stainless,
I agree with bama guy. 10 bucks is not such a big deal.

Now about the blurry picture. I love a blurry pic. I look for them but I always check the sellers fb. I look see if they sell a lot of coins or have sold coins with nice pics in the past. If so I hit the back button. Some of my best coin bargains have come from sellers who don't usually sell coins and don't know how to photograph them. As far as asking the seller to send you better pics. That can hurt you too. I once saw a listing for a bust quarter and half with horrible pics. It was the second time the seller listed them. The first time no one bid. I ask the 100 percent seller who never sold a coin before to send me better pics. She said she was stressing out because she didn't know how to photograph them. So I gave her some tips. She sent me a thank you and better pics but also added them to the listing. I did win the coins but there were many more people at the end of auction party.

I asked the seller for up close pics, he replies:

that pic is the only one I had

Should I be wondering if it's a scam?
