The moment this denarius popped up, I was hooked. The combination of an interesting reverse, high grade (you can even see the individual armor parts of the soldier right) and a provenance makes this coin by far my most interesting Roman Republic (that said, I've got only three or so). Many excellent threads on the reverse have been posted, e.g. this one by @Bing, or this one by @Jochen1. Instead of rewriting these topics, I'll just post my coin: ROMAN REPUBLIC, C. Sulpicius, C. f. Galba . Denomination: AR serrate denarius, minted: Rome, Italy; 106 BC Obv: D P P Conjoined heads of the Dei Penates left Rev: C SVLPICI C F, two soldiers facing one other, each holding spear and pointing at sow between; I above. Weight: 3.65g; Ø:18mm. Catalogue: Crawford 312/1 Provenance: Van der Dussen auction 1989, ex Nuij 2020-04 Please post your highest-grade Roman Republic!
I think this is my highest grade Republican - it's certainly a favourite. Denarius of L. Roscius Fabatus Obv. L. Thanks, I couldn't resist it. I think we have similar tastes in the RR domain, Alegandron! ATB, Aidan.
Since I don't consider grade the most important feature of a coin, I'm not sure which is highest. The grade that matters to me is "Good enough for me".
I'm glad my coin could serve as inspiration for you @Roerbakmix C. SULPICIUS C.f. I only have one Roman Republic coin, a serrate denarius of Q Antonius Balboa. I would hardly call it high grade...In fact, I would call it barely identifiable as to what it is. I won't bother sullying this thread with it Great coins, all. Thanks for sharing!
Congrats, @Roerbakmix ! And I really like the Oath Scene! I think my highest-graded Republican coin -- if I submitted one to a grader for slabbing, which I never, ever would! -- might be one of these four: Roman Republic, Q. Thermus M.f., AR Denarius 103 BCE. Obv. Head of Mars left with crested, plumed helmet/ Rev. Roman soldier advancing right, fighting with uplifted sword a barbarian soldier before him, while protecting with shield a fallen comrade at his feet, Q THERM.MF. in exergue (THE and MF in monograms). RSC I Minucia [Q. Minucius Rufus] 19 (ill.), Crawford 319/1, Sear RCV I 198 (ill.), Sydenham 592.19.4 mm., 3.97 g. (I think the armor and shields on the reverse, and Mars's face and helmet on the obverse, are all clearer on this coin than on most examples I've seen of the type.) Roman Republic, L. Papius, AR Serrate Denarius, 79 BCE. Obv. Head of Juno Sospita right, wearing goat skin; control-symbol of lyre behind/ Rev. Gryphon prancing right, control-symbol of lyre-key below, L. PAPI in exergue. Crawford 384/1 (see also Crawford Vol. II Plate LXVII, control-symbol 127 & p. 788), RSC I Papia 1, Sear RCV I 311 (ill.). 19 mm., 3.79 g., 9 h. Roman Republic, P. Satrienus, AR Denarius, 77 BCE. Obv. Helmeted head of Mars right, control-numeral [[upside-down T]XXXVIIII = 89] behind/ Rev. She-wolf standing left with right front paw raised, ROMA above, P. SATRIE-NVS in two lines below. RSC I Satriena 1, Crawford 388/1b, Sear RCV I 319 (ill.). 18 mm., 3.87 g., 3 hr. Roman Republic, Cn. Plancius, AR Denarius, 55 BCE, Rome mint. Obv. Female head (Diana Planciana [acc. to RSC] or Macedonia [acc. to RCV & Crawford]) right, wearing causia, CN. PLANCIVS before, AED. CVR. S. C. behind/ Rev. Cretan goat standing right, bow and quiver to left. RSC I Plancia 1, Crawford 432/1, Sydenham 933, Sear RCV I 396 (ill.). 18 mm, 3.82 gm, 5h. Perhaps the last one; I don't know. It's difficult for me to choose! So see also this photo of my entire (small) collection of 18 Republican coins in their tray -- including my own Roscius Fabatus denarius, which I like very much but has an incomplete legend, so it wouldn't be graded that highly -- which I posted yesterday in the "Republican Animal Reverses" thread, at https://www.cointalk.com/attachment...-in-tray-1-2-without-greek-coins-jpg.1105063/ .
Thanks all! Some very nice coins have been posted here. I guess I need to pay the Roman Republic a bit more attention ...
...i haven't bought it yet(bidding on a high grade one at the moment)....this was my last purchase..i gave up some grade, saved a bundle and got one of my most sought after coins(@Alegandron the influencer).. C. Antestius, Doggo and Dioscuri twins, 18mm,3.82 gms
I don't have any C. Sulpicius, C. f. Galba to show. But I have this one L. Marcius Philippus, denarius - Rome mint, 56 BC [ANCVS] Head of Ancus Marcius right, lituus behind him PHILIPVS AQUA MAR, Equestrian statue above a five arch aqueduct 3.66 gr Ref : RCV #382, RSC, Marcia # 28 Q
