this is my latest carving using the 1879 coiled hair pattern dollar as the subject and carved on a 1879 morgan dollar..note that this carving is signed and numbered by billzach and also the letting on a original coiled hair pattern dollar is different...pattern dollars sell for 6 figure prices and i carve about 5 a year for collectors who can not afford a original...this carving has been aged out around rim and edge of face to give it a nice tone....again this carving is deeply engraved with my fancy [z]...
Billzach, The next time you do a carving, can you give us pics during various stages of the carving from beginning to end? I'd like to see how the coin is gradually transformed...
I, too, would like to see the process...VERY cool! How do you choose your subjects? Can you do one of those from a photo? It would make a cool pocket piece for my husband to have one done of Joe. Please PM me.
i number my carvings for several different reasons, the main reason is to keep a record of them, time period when carved, also to keep a dishonest person from trying to sell my buffalo nickel carvings as old original hobo nickels....the secretary of o.h.n.s. also keeps a picture and number of each carving i carve...it,s sorta like a painting, people like signed work....carvings or hobo nickels are selling for $4500 plus and probably will reach the $10,000 figure in the next 5 years....
sorry, i didn,t answer your question , my pattern dollar carvings will be limited to around 5 per year, so i may carve 2 or 3 more pattern dollars this year or maybe no more....so there will never be many pattern dollar carvings by billzach...
Once again beautiful work Billzach, but I do have one question. What is used to blend the look of the newly carved silver with the original? As in this statment, Quote; .this carving has been aged out around rim and edge of face to give it a nice tone. Thank You for sharing I hope to see more, Dave
