I agree with Jody that we should keep the founding fathers on our coins. After all if the revoultion was lost they would not have been making TV commericals but would have been on the end of a noose. Besides our country needs a central identity that all Americans should identify with and that identify is not so much the person but the ideal that person created/represented. As for Reagan, he was a great man who led us out of the cold war but to place him on a dime would be a shame when one thinks of the depression and WWII as both being a fight for democracy.

But don't you think that Americans can get behind Lady Liberty again? It worked for over a hundred years.

Actually, I'm surprised that the French government haven't claimed her and asked to get her back. I like the founding fathers to be the constant for our coins as long as we have coinage but I have no gripe with a one year minting of the Bill of Rights or Remembering Veterans of all our wars, etc. every once in awhile. Just because I don't like Vanilla or Chocolate ice cream doesn't mean I wouldn't try Strawberry. I just don't want to see the flavor of the day replacing what was, what is and what should always be. Now excuse me for I hear buzzing out of my window ND.

You know, I just check out walking liberty coins and I almost forgot that she was a hot number. Maybe I should reconsider this matter. Lets start a campaign to dump Susan B Anthony and replace her with Carmen Electra or that Corn chip girl. Now I am all for Women voting, hey my wife votes twice after she tells me what to do on election day but let us not forget that Susan B Anthony was not one to down a six as a chaser and in my book, yes I can reed, thats unamerican.

Have you viewed the St Gaudens lately. One beautiful coin. We need to get back to changing it every 25 years like it was supposed to be.

I too have a deep respect for our forefathers...but I'm ready to see Liberty on our coinage! Some of the most beautiful coins in our history are the St. Gaudens $20, Walking Liberty half, Standing Liberty quarter...see a pattern here?
Make a dollar coin as attractive as any of the above and it will find success where the Susies and Sacs did not, imo.

There are plenty of images of Liberty on modern Mint issues. The Eagle bullion program is nothing but Liberty designs.
As far as coins for collectors, there are no shortages of coins in all denominations with Liberty designs.
And if you go into World coinage, you can find just about any design you can imagine.

Whatever is decided for our coinage, I think we need to somehow put all denominations into general use. The first time I was in Nevada I remember stuffing Peace dollars in the slots and then when the Susie came out I thought good, no more tokens at the casinos and vending machines but it didn't happen. I can't speak for the rest of the country, but around these parts State Quarters aren't even passed around because people are hoarding them. I go to my bank and ask for Sac's and they say "well, let me look" and then scrounge up a few and none are new rolls of uncirculated. The circulated gold color isn't very pretty, dull and wore out looking. So I don't think gold color is the answer for the $1. How about the same design and size as the bullion dollar?

Jody I hear ya but I'd still like to see beautifully designed coinage in my pocket and presidents on commemorative issues.

Regarding the dollar coin I think one option would be a slightly larger coin. Size is an instant identifier of denomination. Ikes are/were too big and heavy. Maybe something slightly bigger than the half. Of course there's the vending industry to consider, too.

Hey, I forgot all about the Sac dollar and the bill boards on the trains of New York that subjected it's riders to over a year of advanced advertising. What a useless issue that was with it's fake gold tint. I still stand by my first statement, even if I would like to see the cornchip chick on something, our coins should stay pat as our democratic past to remind the present and the future what the backbone of our country is, (ethics with reason),with an occasional one year change of pace to honor other aspects of the nation and the people who made it great. Like the cornchip girl.

What's the point of having a $1 coin as long as we keep printing dollar bills that weigh less and are more convenient?

And for that matter, why do we bother minting 50¢ pieces any more?

Who is this corn chip girl you speak of? That sounds like something I should be familiar with.

Have you ever heard of the greatest. Well when they speak of Ali as being the greatest you must know that they are talking about Ali Landy the Doritos girl from the Superbowl commercials. She's so pretty, she doesn't need to expose herself to get attention. Anyway my wife looks like her when I'm sleeping and I think she would look alot better then some old past politicians who hadn't done anything to get on a coin in the first place. You know those presidents that no one remembers for a reason or worse those we would like to forget. Anyway I would like to e-mail Ms. Henrietta Holsman Fore about it and I'm not sure if I'm kidding.

oh THAT corn chip girl. :)

After careful deliberation I've come to the conclusion that her likeness on modern day coinage would indeed facilitate commerce.

Jody is a true Southern Gentlemen and I promise him that I will never e-mail the government to put the corn chip girl on the Jefferson nickel but I do think that if she's on a coin it would help the circulation.

By that you must mean that only gold and silver coin would be issued by the federal government and nothing released under the fraudulent authority of the "federal reserve" which is not federal and which is also not any sort of reserve.

The Constitution makes no provision for paper money and states unequivocally that only gold and silver coin are to be recognized as money.

I'm so glad to see that you've changed your mind about fiat money. ;-)
