Bought as part of an old collection, this worn, polished (!) and laminated denarius clearly had seen more glorious days. Many excellent posts have been written on the IVDAEA coins, commemorating the victory over Jeruzalem, so I'll just post the coin. ROMAN IMPERIAL, Vespasian. Denomination: AR denarius, minted: Rome, Italy; 69 - 70 AD Obv: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG: Head of Vespasian, laureate, right Rev: IVDAEA: Judaea seated right, hand tied behind her back; palm-tree, left Weight: 3g; Ø:17mm. I owned this one a few years back but had to part with it a few years ago, Vespasian Denarius Obv:– IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG, Laureate head right Rev:– IVDEA, Judean captive seated right, at base of trophy Minted in Rome. A.D. 69 - 70 Reference:– RIC II 266. RSC 226. Weight 3.30g. 18.24mm
Leuke munt! Despite the wear, that portrait is nice. Moreover, I think it is never wrong to have a coin that refers to a historical event. This Vespasian probably indirectly also refers to the victory in Judaea. Vespasian 69-79 AR Denarius struck 72-73 AD 2,86g/18mm IMP CAES VESP AVG PM COS IIII, laureate head right. That's a beaten up but great to have in your collection. A large amount of history hides behind that specific reverse design. Here's mine:
This just came in today from @Valentinian today. I purchased it on Saturday. I couldn't pass up such a historical coin with my favorite reverse of Nike/Victory on it. While not Vespasian, or a denarius, it still fits the theme I think Titus AE 20mm Judaea Capta Minted at Caesarea Maritima Obverse: AYTOKΡ TITOΣ KAIΣAΡ, laureate head right Reverse: IOYΔAIAΣ EAΛΩKYIAΣ, Nike standing right, foot on helmet, inscribing shield attached to palm tree
I bought this one from Tom Vossen about 4 or 5 years ago: Vespasian. 69-79 AD. AR Denarius (3.47 gm, 16mm). “Judaea Capta” commemorative. Antioch mint. Struck 72-73 AD. Obv.: laureate head right. Rev.: Palm tree; to left, Vespasian standing right, holding spear and parazonium; to right, Jewess seated right in attitude of mourning. Attrib.: RIC II 1558; Hendin 1490; RPC II 1930; RSC 645.
Nice one @philologus_1 I have the Rome issue, but I wish it was in better shape T CAES IMP VESP PON TR POT Laureate head of Titus right Titus sanding right, left foot on helmet, holding spear and parazonium, Palm tree before him at foot of which Judaea, as a mourning captive, is seated right, on ground Rome 72 AD 3.32g RIC II 369 (R2)
