Got my first PCGS order back. This is a box I sent in on 3/2 but due to their temporary shut down only got back today. Exceptionally pleased with the grades! I was hoping that 1-2 of the gold pieces would come back 70s and the rest would be 69s, but was blown away by my luck 1) getting these coins from the mint and 2) getting these grades from PCGS. (Since getting these grades, I've looked at PCGS's population reports for the 2014 gold Kennedy and 2016 centennial series; turns out 70s are far more common than 69s.) The 8th coin was from a proof set I picked up ~2012 in a random antique store in a small, sleepy town in Oregon between Portland and Evergreen Aviation Museum (home of the one and only Hughes H-4, "Spruce Goose"). I was impressed by this Kennedy half and eyeballed it as PR66/67 CAM/DCAM. Unfortunately, PCGS did not agree with the CAM, but the coin is nonetheless a pretty beautiful strike! Edit/PS - was able to build the centennial set registry set and tie for all time finest first place set -- along with ~110 other folks
Seems I used up all my PCGS luck with this order. The next one (also submitted back in early March) did not fare as well unfortunately. I'd eyeballed each of the moderns as 69s and the 1996-W as MS66/67. Absolutely shocked with the PR65 and PR68 grades...
Yes; I agree. I don't want to seem unreasonable Just surprised that a modern proof penny could come back as low as PR65. I think this speaks to the way these coins were shipped from the mint - in flimsy plastic envelopes, along side the 2019 annual sets. Similarly, surprised about the 2014 proof half. Here, I have to assume that I must've contaminated the coin when transferring from mint capsule to the 2.5x2.5 flip.
