My son was watching me on Coin Talk earlier today, and he got very curious about it especially when I was looking at a thread where there was a photo of a coin. He's been into Webkinz for a while, so I explained to him that Coin Talk was somewhat like Webkinz but instead of stuffed animals we have coins. Somehow we got onto the topic of the State Quarters and Presidential Dollars. He's seen plenty of the State Quarters in change, but never the Presidential Dollars. I haven't really been into the modern coins that much for quite a few years. He asked me if I could show him the Presidential Dollars. I don't have any, and ended up promising him to get him some, lol (I'm a sucker for the kids, get them pretty much whatever they ask for if it's reasonable). I don't really want to buy a roll of each from the mint, or buy them randomly from some Ebayer. Where would you guys suggest I look for them?
last time i was at the bank and pick up a roll i got every one form the denver mint and a couple from the phil. and a SBA $ was mix in.
I dont know much about the Us coins but if you could find them in your change, id suggest you go to the bank and get a bag and let the kids have fun searching for them! I am sure they will love it, because i do when my mum brings me a bag full of 20c
Vending machines that take $5 bills usually dispense dollar coins (perhaps your post office still has a stamp vending machine). Even though I see them fairly often in circulation I collect them from mint/proof sets, which gets me the full mint mark set in high quality with low effort (although this may be a bit much depending on how truly interested he is). Also, if you want just a presidential proof set, they can often be had on the open market for less than the mint charges.
If condition isnt much of an issue, you could go to the post office, insert a 5-20 dollar bill into the stamp machine, buy one stamp and it should spit out presidential dollars for change.
I agree the bank and the post office would be a good place to start. I think it is great your son is showing an interest in coins.
Both the banks and post office are good, I have found that you can find both Dollar and Half Dollar coins at the bank, most tellers have one or both in change they have taken in during the day and are glad to have someone buy them. Last week I picked up 10 halves and 15 small dollars from local banks.
I always get a roll of them at the bank, spend most and keep the best examples...I think thats your best bet...they ARE US currency so you can spend the extra coins...The bank I go to always has the older ones and I have to wait for the new ones a bit...
Yeah I picked up a roll from the bank a few weeks ago. The post office sounds like a good idea though.
peter,pm your address,i have the usmint bookmarks with coins in them https://materials.usmint.gov/$1coin/imgs/item_full/Coinboard_Large.jpg
My wife stopped with Adam at the bank on the way home from his dentist appointment this morning and found some Monroe dollars and got him a roll of quarters to search so he could fill some empty slots in his quarter album. Looks like he was enjoying himself.
