David Lawrence always has nice Barber halves for sale/bid, some pretty ones up for auction now that ends Thursday night.

Could it be that a lot of the lower graded Barbers are being melted for bullion? That's what's happening with my local dealer (who is really more a bullion guy these days).

Not mine, Orlando. You can still find him in the phone book.

Just when I was about to give up on completing my dimes I ran across an 1895 S in VF with an old cleaning. After all the complaining I've done about not being able to find semi and minor keys above VG I couldn't pass on it.

That's great, bq, I've yet to find one I liked. What are you still missing for the set?

    WELCOME TO THE FORUM
There are several reasons those are becoming harder to find.
    1. They don't make them anymore
    2. More collectors now than ever also
    3. Lots got melted down for thier Silver
    4. They just don't make them anymore except maybe in China
    :D:D

I think the reason is that most of them are now in Treashunt,s safe.;) Down the road you will see an action listed as "The other Frank,s hoard" including many fine Barbers. :D

I still need 92s 93pos 94 97pos 98os 99s 00os 06s 08o 09do, thats 17 of which only three are considered semi key and 5 or 6 I would consider a minor key coin. The thing is I want them in Fine or Better, maybe VG for the semi keys if they are problem free examples but its like searching for needles in a haystack, very expensive needles.

And to think, I've seen people on here saying the Barbers were the worst, ugliest design the mint ever came out with on other threads!

I think they are neat in their own right and quite possibly the first quote in my sig line could now apply to the Barber series. :mouth:

Just looked on ebay. There really isn't much for them on there either. Very surprising. A few rolls. A handful of nice NGC graded ones anyway. You guys aren't kidding.

I do not dabble in Barbers, but this thread does beg the general question: 'Is there demand?"

The coins are out there and coin dealers will be most happy to sell them to you. That may mean higher prices to pry them loose from whoever has them, but apparently that isn't happening.

I don't think the collective mass of coin dealers and e-bay sellers would ignore making money, if it exists. Dealers love nothing more than to buy stuff that they know they can move quick. Is that not the case here?

There was mention of e-bay. Do Barber dime auctions get dozens of bids? Even for common dates? I don't know - just tossing out thoughts.

The problem with the bay is that on quality pieces I am consistently outbid and the winning bids generally go for a large percentage over greysheet. That and with the Credit card only baloney that they're going to on Oct 20, I won't be there again. I buy with money orders and only accept money orders or not at all.

All righty then, no time for pics now but just based on the LIBERTY, what would you call a barber dime with a full L I top half B showing top line E curve of R full TY. Its a 1900-O and all and all I'm leaning somewhere between not quite good enough to be fine (VG-10) and just good enough (by the skin of the teeth) F-12.

I'd suggest taking a good picture of the coin using the macro setting of your camera. You might be surprised at what you're not seeing in LIBERTY. It might be such that you can qualitatively state that it's a 12.

Like you've described it right now though I'd go with your assessment of a 10.
