Im thinking about starting a collection of new us coins. I want to collect odd looking coins. I need some of your thoughts on what I should start with or what you think should go into my collection.
    Thanks

Might not be coins but have you ever considered collecting medals? The US mint has a bountiful supply and prices are fairly reasonable.

I'm sorry but it is just too hard to pass this one up. Have you ever considered collecting toned coins.;)

Another route for odd coins would be an error collection. Some of them are super cool and super expensive and others are just unusual and affordable. I will show you one of each in the following links.

The first is an elephant man error (very expensive)

The second is something I have never heard of before, a copper wash error on a modern state quarter (Affordable).

Either way, collecting error coins provides you with many fantastic and interesting oddball coins at a whole range of prices. The best part about error coins is that they exist on every date and denomination. Good Luck.

Be ready to pay some dollars for well toned coins.

I've been known to pay up to 10x Red Book for High MS Moderns with attractive toning (I really like rainbow toning on Roosevelt's)

I am not sure just what your definition of "odd looking" is, but there are people who collect the lowest grade certified coin they can find. Some of those (most?) strike me as odd.

I have three type sets that I work on.

One of them is housed in a Dansco 7070, it holds the BEST coins in my collection.

I also have a 20th century type set Whitman Folder that I use to hold my best examples from roll hunting.

Finally I have another 7070. This one is my favorite of the bunch. It holds a collection of the worst undamaged example that I can find. This is a lot harder than it sounds. Of course the early dates are easy to find, but I challenge you to find an AG SBA that's VG or worse due to normal wear!!! (The best (or worst as the case may be) that I've been able to find is a VF.

wonder what causes some of the new quarters to carry a more yellow color? they look fake. I've found quite a few of them in my change.
