    And, in case there is any confusion from the posts,
    the Waffle Cancellation coins are Cancelled IN the
    Mint - that's why they're considered collectable.

    Yes, they're 'damaged', but they're damaged INSIDE
    the Mint.

    This article is very good if one has read it as shows the waffling machine at D mint and other nice photos and the article is excellent reading for new collectors. Jim

    I have a 1966, waffled penny, it is legit. I'm not sure if they are rare, but would like to know.

    Yep, waffled 37 years before the mint got the machine to do it.

    I know everyone does not believe me about my 1966 waffled penny , but it is legit, I swear it! It was found in abox a couple of years ago, from an auction, I'm not sure if this is rare , but would love to know, this was created at the mint ,I don't know how it got out.but It did, it is real.

    I'm not doubting you have a 1966 cent that has been waffled, I'm saying it was not done at the mint in 1966 (because they didn't have the equipment at that time.). The mint isn't the only place that has that type of equipment and it was almost certainly done elsewhere.

    Ok, I understand they did not start waffling coins until 2003, but did they only waffle modern minted coins or new coins or did they waffle hoards of old coins as well, has anyone one seen many pennies waffled, and what is the earliest years people have seen on coins, please let me know.

    @Douglas armstrong
    Please post pictures. There are so many ways for coins to be damaged and your story doesn't quite add up. I think the Mint did waffle coins returned through ttheir damaged coin redemption program but am not certain. These coins were sold for scrap. If you found your coin in circulation, it is very unlikely that it was Mint canceled.

    Mint waffling is very distintive, so it should be easy to tell from cropped, focused pics of the obverse and reverse.

    The "trust me, I know it's real" does not carry any weight unless you can back it up. How long have you been collecting? What areas do you specialize in?What is your experience with Errors and Varieties? Do you have detailed knowledge of the minting process? See where I'm going. Anybody can say anything on this site (I can't find my video of Bigfoot having lunch with Aliens but trust me, I saw it). So without pics, members are skeptical. "Trust me", with no pics after a few days and multiple posts starts pushing you into the troll status.

    Assuming you're a new collector and not someone trolling, you NEED to post pics. If not...well, you'll end up on a lot of Ignore lists.

    Hope this helps

    As oldhoopster says the only reason they would be waffling older coins would be if they were returned for redemption because they were seriously damaged or severely worn. The mint doesn't have stockpiles of older coins sitting around.
