This is the reason I asked about the guide books to large cents. I've got it ID'ed as 37-7 from Wright's book. The die crack on the reverse appears to be the PUP.
The coin matches up with Newcomb 7. The reverse is State b of Reverse f. The center dot and some scratches above MERI were removed to form State b of reverse f. The die crack through STATES OF is also present on Reverse f State a, which is N8.
THAT'S the sort of description that I'd like to be able to do. I don't have the books yet, but if all goes well, I will soon.
Yes N-7 and N-8 are different die stages of the same die pair with8 being the early stage and 7 is the later stage.
