I recently picked up this pretty rough Probus for about $0.74 from a mixed lot of 200 coins. It was my first Probus, so I couldn't complain for the price. Probus AE Antoninianus 279-280 AD Obv: IMP C PROBVS PF AVG. Radiate, cuirassed bust right. Rev: CONCORDIA MILIT. Probus and Concordia clasping hands. Diameter: 21mm Reference: RIC 665 Cost: $0.74 But I wanted something better. So, I spent $9.99 and got something better. Probus AE Antoninianus. 276-282 AD Obv: IMP CM AVR PROBVS P AVG. Radiate, helmeted and cuirassed bust left. Holding spear and shield. Rev: SOL(I) (IN)VICTO. Sol on Quadriga raising right hand. KAB mintmark Diameter: 22mm Reference: RIC 864,B Cost: $9.99 By way of divine coincidence, both coins have a flan crack on top of their heads, so now I can't bring myself to get rid of the low quality one. Crackhead brothers for life!
Nice acquisition, @hotwheelsearl ! I love coins that show usage. It means that many ancient hands have touched them. I find the term “Crackhead” rather offensive however. I know that you are referring to the break in the flan and I’m sure you didn’t mean any harm by it, but I’ve lost too many good friends to the disease of addiction.
You’re a good man, and I enjoy your posts! I guess we’re all getting a little squirrelly under the circumstances. Good health to you, my friend!
I recently picked up a cheap-o Probus - some problems with the strike, but with most of the silvering intact: Probus Æ Antoninianus (276-282 A.D.) Antioch Mint IMP CM AVR PROBVS PF AVG, radiate, cuirassed and draped bust right / RESTITVT O[RBI]S, woman standing right, presenting wreath to emperor, Γ in center, XXI in exergue RIC Antioch 925, Γ; Sear 12021. (3.56 grams / 20 mm)
I do not own any "crack head" coins... but do own many coins I wish were in better condition. This Probus is actually not too bad in hand but its sins are exposed under the camera lens. My terrible photography skills don't help. Will try for a better shot over the weekend.
