Here is something to ponder...... what would you do if the US gov decided to reintroduce silver to our coinage? This is just hypothetical, but lets just say the gov decided to make our dimes 40% silver. Would you continue spending them as usual? or Would you hoard the heck out of them? I think I would be hoarding the heck out of them. I got thinking about this after I got through reading an article in Coin World about that Congressman who wants to reintroduce the half dime. In the article, they explained the history of the half dime as it related to our circulating currency. Of course, the new version would be copper clad.... but wouldn't that be neat if it were silver? So who would hoard and who wouldn't.... and if you wouldn't, why not?
I would probably hoard a box of each mint for each year. I would also hoard a box for each of the 2 years before they come out. We shall have to see what the french are doing with their money. I heard that silver was being reintroduced to that country.

1. Id run around in circles shouting * SILVER SILVER * 2. then id hoard em all up until they all run out
I don't think the govt. would issue silver coins for fear of people hoarding them. I know I'd be holdin' on to them.
Any coin with the slightest hint of silver would never see the light of day. It would be rarer than a Dead Prez dollar in a cash register. Even coat it with a microscopic silver layer and it's gone. Never happen
ROTFLOL!!!! Exactly! This is a hypothetical question gang...... what would you do if the gov. put silver back in our coinage..... Hoard or Not Hoard And Noost, good call on the French. I have read several articles where they are looking to put both silver and gold back into their circulating currency. And as far as I am aware, they are going to do it, if they are not doing it already. I believe it was supposed to start this year.
I won't even comment, because in all likelihood even copper and nickel are going to find their way out of our coinage very soon.
What you read was wrong. France is part of the euro area, and the euro circulation coins do not contain any silver, gold, platinum, etc. And of course there are no plans to use such metals for circulation pieces. Guess that what may have confused some people outside the euro area is the fact that the French Mint has, for the first time in years, issued collector coins at face value this year, and will continue to do that in 2009 and 2010. Other member states have been doing that for a long time. But those collector coins do not actually circulate. They are legal tender in the issuing member state only, thus regional money. Even in the issuing countries you will have an extremely hard time "finding" them in circulation ... Christian
That's a tough one. Obviously you want to say hoard, but what really defines our hobby is the hunt for that one coin that noone paid attention to, that lived its like in a bank drawer somewhere. What would we collect if there were 5,000,000 of every coin ever minted? In order to preserve the thrill of the hunt for future generations, I would say not hoard.
I'd collect a set of date/mintmark half dimes but I wouldnt hoard them. I'd be surprised if it became a reality though.
