Do these look like chopmarks to you? Or...? Thanks for your help. Sorry I wish I had better close ups.
Thanks GDJMSP. The two marks on the left do look random. But I wasn't sure when I saw that circle mark. That mark doesn't look random. I don't know what that might be from or for. Maybe it has no significance at all.
Thanks willieboyd2. I go back and forth on this. It's a coin I'm considering buying but there is a language barrier with the seller so it's hard to get a better verbal description of the coin and marks. I don't know if this site has been posted before but some of you may find it of use, or at least interesting: Chopmarked Foreign Silvers Make sure to look at the coins under the Specimens section. He shows good examples but I wish the pictures were bigger and clearer. It was after looking through the examples that made me think again that those may be chopmarks on the above coin. The site shows 2 types of fonts for the Chinese characters. Scroll down on this page to see the 2 font types - the smaller font (Type 1) - many are not so easily recognizable as Chinese characters, some look like accidental dings on the coin. - the larger font (Type 2) - these are easily recognizable as Chinese characters. The marks on the coin I posted could be the smaller font Type 1 chopmarks. But it's hard to say. I think I will just buy the coin and see. Either way I'm going to stop obsessing about it. I just really enjoy researching coins and their history.
"there is a language barrier with the seller" The seller isn't located in China, is he? A lot of counterfeit silver coins come out of China.
I've been seeing the quality counterfeits all over Ebay so like you said, it doesn't matter anymore. I also think there are a few sellers that are buying direct from Chna then reselling them as authentic but since most deals for the non-replica stamped coins don't go through Ebay, they are hard to trace. After collecting ancients for many years, in the last year I've started collecting early Spanish money of the New World. You're right, you just can't only avoid the Chinese sellers and think you're safe. (BTW, the coin I posted above is not from eBay. I rarely buy coins there anymore.)
