Hi, this coin was part of a small lot of unidentified coins. All others from Sicily. This one is the toughest to ID for me, quite worn... 17 mm and 3,93 g Regarding the obverse I found it similar to this type of coin: O: Bull charging left on a plain exergual line, barley grain above. https://www.sixbid-coin-archive.com/#/de/single/l31562581 http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/sicily/hipana/t.html https://www.sixbid-coin-archive.com/#/de/single/l31143864 But the reverse... It doesn´t exactly look like the square shape of an astragalus... So maybe I´m on the wrong track... Anyone able to help?
Coins from Hipana or Hippana, as spelled in "An Inventory of Archaic and Classical Poleis" by M.H. Hansen and T.H. Nielsen, don´t seem very common. All three coins I am aware of - one AR type (eagle/dolphin+scallop) and two AE (bull/astragalos, bull/horse) - are mentioned in this publication. Wildwinds lists both AE coins and in Reginald Stuart Poole - "A catalogue of the greek coins in the British Museum" we find the single silver type. Searching Hipana/Hippana in this forum gets no hit at all - except this thread. A nebulous situation ;-)
