I have been collecting coins from ancients to moderns for 13 years. I've been involved in, or lurked on, many of the coin forums.

Exactly. I like how everyone is included and receives attention and help, or at the very least support and acknowledgment. No one is ignored. There is no "In Crowd" that you feel excluded from.

For example, I've seen this happen to others on other forums, and had it happen to me a couple times. Someone will put in a lot of effort and thought to post a truly informative, useful and even entertaining post. Then no one responds. No "Nice post!" No "Thanks!" No "That is useful!". No smiley even. No response at all. It's just ignored.

But here I like that people's posts can be acknowledged by posters nominating them for The Topic Nomination Contest. I think this is a great idea. It shows that the posts from the members are valued.

I even had a topic nominated and I got 3 Reputation Points! Even though I'm new, and I only post occasionally, I feel a part of the forum. More so than any of the other forums that I've been a member of.

But even if this coin forum is friendly it wouldn't be much without its knowledgeable people. This is not Coin Talk Lite. There's always someone who can provide an answer. Or at least steer you in the right direction to look for it.

I am a member of several others, Only 2 forums do I activley participate in. This is the main one, and I am an poster in a Canadian coin forum. I havnt been there for quite some time now, but I pop in every now and then and catch up on all the goodie topics I missed out on.
CT Is by far the most informative forum I've signed up for. Discussions here range from PCGS graded Keys, to low grade Roosevelt'ls. The sky is the limit, and you won't be picked on for a 10 dollar pick up, which could be your best coin. I enjoy the friendly community aspect of CT. every now and then I run into members from here on other sites around the web, and The friendly tone isnt the same as it is here.. Mostly because we're all on the same page here. Given some exceptions every now and then, generally its a friendly forum.
The dedication from the knowledgable collectors, towards the YN's and fresh numistmatists is inspiring. honestly.. I wouldnt be serious about colelcting if I hadnt found this site. The one who started me in collecting was my Grandpa, He has since passed away, and there is no one around to talk coins with. He was not a technical collector. Im not even sure if he could grade a coin (im sure he would surprise me with his knowledge, If I could talk to him now about it.). Once I joined here, I learnt the ins and outs about collecting, everything from AT and NT, cleaning, slabbing coins, keys and semi keys, books, and most importantly .. Grading.
Regardless if you know a ton or are still green, this forum is a great place for the education you need to become a knowledgable collector.

and with all that said. Ive been an a** latley. I've been homesick and tired for the last 3 weeks. please forgive me, Im working on it.

I had never been a forum PERIOD until CT. Obviously I like it as I've had several thousand things to say in the past year and a half.
I did some searching, found CT, got a warm welcome and started at it.

Have made a lot of friends and really never thought I would get so involved. I have to periodically clean out my PMs because I'm running out of room. NEVER saw that happening.

I do now "belong" to 4 or 5 other forums. Two I'm posting on fairly regularly.

I ended up there when a respected member and friend decided to leave CT. Hey, none of my business why he left really I just knew I wanted to keep in touch so I followed him while remaining here.

No disrespect to CT but it is a nice change of pace actually. Smaller sites, I'm meeting new people and yes, I have run into a few friends from CT on these forums.

I will add that CT has a "recognition" factor. When I introduce myself on a different forum and a longer standing member there says "hey I know him he's not a total idiot;)" it's easier to fit in.

Nothing wrong with belonging to multiple forums. I have no immediate plans to leave this one either.

Although this thread was designed to discuss coin chat vs. coin forums and where to post a certain thread, it certainly has evolved into an interesting discussion that obviously needed to be aired. All involved in this had very good coments and personally I appreciated the side tracking. But my question still remains.

I haven't a clue where to post a thread or the technical difference in the two forums. :desk: I guess I'll juss keep on posting/responding where ever it seems comfortable. And If the mods wanna move 'em . . . den move 'em!

I hold membership in more forums than I can remember.
When I get bored I will scan the ones I can remember and check out whats going on.
If by active you mean number of posts then this has to be one of my less active forums. I am only really active on one forum. I do however spend a lot of time just reading posts. I try not to comment unless I have something constructive to say. Sometimes I'll slip up and say something glib or dumb but hey that's life.

I think most of us look at other forums. They all have their strong points. I personally enjoy coin talk because of the information provided in a friendly, helpful atmosphere. It is also a excellent forum for younger collectors since members enjoy helping newbies and young collectors. I also appreciate the clean atmosphere/language coin talk promotes. Nice little break from the world.:p

I am a member of several others but I have found CoinTalk to be a friendly place to participate. I don’t post very often but I do spend a lot of time just reading posts usually twice a day.

As I am a European and collect primarily coins from around here (Euro and a few others, mostly 20/21c), I hang around in various forums. Among those coin sites that have a predominantly American population :) Coin Talk is currently the one I "use" most, in terms of reading and posting. It sure is an active place, knowledgeable people, nice atmosphere.

I think the answer to your question is right there on the index page -

    US Coins Forum
This forum dedicated to the discussion of United States Coins.

    Coin Chat
Please use this section for discussion of numismatic topics that don't fit in other sections.

In other words, Coin Chat is kind of the catch all, like the drawer you have at home where you throw a hodge podge of everything because you don't know right off where else to put it.

As for the mods moving things, we only move them when we think that the person asking a question or making a comment will get better or more responses in another section - or when it's obvious a move is needed. Otherwise we just leave things where they are.

What draws me to cointalk is:

#1: It was the first board I ever joined.
#2: I really like the way it is set up.
#3: The people are friendly, informative, and friendly. :D
    #4: Just cuz, lol. :D
