Thanks to the AMCC auction in November I was able to complete a 12 Caesars set in denarii. Figured this would be as good a time as any to post some photos (it took me a while to get shots - a new iPad - of the Galba and Otho denarii). In the coming days I will post images of the "next 20" acquired through Maximinus Thrax. Thank you to you all for posting and providing such interesting content. It has helped me push through these recent days.
Great achievement and great coins! That Claudius is especially appealing. Amazing coin . I'm almost there with 12 in silver and in the way im pleased with it. I think it can be done this year. But nowhere near the next 20 or so. Im waiting for you to post that!
Amazing acquisitions! I too am trying to get all 12, and I have 3 so far. I am interested to see your next ones!
Fantastic! I tried counting emperors (including usurpers) from Nerva through Maximinus Thrax, and kept coming up with 19. Are you counting Aelius Caesar to get to 20? Anyway, congratulations. Maybe that'll be the new goal for people -- the 32 Caesars! I have 10 of the 12 (in silver and bronze), and 15 of the next 20, all in silver. (The five I'm missing are the most expensive ones, I think -- Pertinax, Didius Julianus, Pescennius Niger, Clodius Albinus, and Diadumenian.) After Maximinus Thrax, good luck with Gordian I and Gordian II!
I recognize that Gaius I am glad to see it as part of a 12 caesars collection. That is a nice set you have assembled. Congrats! Here are my 12 in denarii.
Thank you all for the kind comments. @DonnaML , yes, I am counting Aelius. Not sure about G1 and G2 - may focus available funds elsewhere (including some upgrades). @Orfew , thank you, literally could not have done it without you. @Limes , thank you, right after I purchased the Claudius, I saw an awesome Durer etching of Nemisis - reminded of the permanence of some of these themes. @Justin Lee , thank you, I looked for a halfway decent example of Auggie with VV for some time.
Congrats rg3 , I put my 18 Denarii set in a converted displaycase, its on the wall of my office. Any plans how to store your set ?
Nice Denarius collection, @rg3 ... Mine is a mishmash of denominations, but I enjoy it. Seutonius 12 Caesars Denarii Dupondius Asses Tets Quinarii
I know Orfew ideally wanted to keep his 12 Caesars set together, but it looks like his AMCC offerings helped complete two other 12 Caesars sets, including my own, with his Otho.
I really like your denarius of Augustus. Off centre, but the portrait is a beauty, the metal looks crisp and if my eyes are not mistaken, i see great flowlines on the reverse!
Congrats @Gavin Richardson, sounds like this auction was fruitful across the board. Concerning the N - "banker's mark" (?), @dougsmit, I really have no idea. This was a CNG purchase where they gave no extra info in the lot description. I searched for a few hours online for other marks that match and could not find any. Of course, I would like to think it has something to do with Nero's monetary reforms (maybe the N for Nero), but this is probably a stretch given the reform's widespread nature (and lack of any/many other examples). Maybe a mark to be melt (given its supposed greater than desired purity), and this one escaped the furnace? Just thoughts, neat to imagine. Also, awesome displays (and sets) @Andres2 and @Bing. No plans to display (or remove from secure storage) yet. My father did make a beautiful coin storage box, so maybe one day I will rest the 12 here:
