    Hi,
I am hoping that someone could help me with this. I have an opportunity to purchase this coin, but I am not sure of it's authenticity. I have not seen the coin in person, but do have an obverse and reverse picture of it. I have searched most of the Sheldon references and can't seem to find it. Please notice the "N" in CENT; it is below the top of the "T" instead of above it as in most that I have seen. Also please notice the "E" in ONE; it is tilted down toward the southeast quadrant of the coin. It is my understanding that the true color of this coin is almost black. If anyone could shed some light on this coin I would be greatly appreciative.
    Thanks,
    William

Yes, that does look odd... as if it has been tooled to restore lost detail. It's possible that's the case of obverse hair details as well.

In any event, this coin has significant porosity; in fact, I would call it corroded. Take that into account when discussing price. The quality of the planchet is critical with these old coppers; this planchet is not good.

There's nothing leading me to call it counterfeit.

Its also possible that the coin was corroded in the areas surrounding "one cent" and then was scrubbed to remove the corrosion areas. I think the coin is genuine, but without seeing it in hand I couldn't say for sure.

    Thank You ...

To everyone who helped me identify the coin I would like to say Thanks ! I am working on dial-up and never got that deep into the Sheldon varieties. It is definitely a S55. The seller has the coin graded at VF, but has it priced at only $250.00. I am thinking that I will scoop it up. Thanks again,
    William

This coin is really more a VG/F than a VF.

I think it's a good deal for the price! :thumb:

I'd buy it for that price! :D Then sell it for double to Sundance.

I can't wait for my 1795 S-76a (lettered edge variety) LCC to get in so I can show it off. :D It'll probably be late this week or the first of next week. I'm going bonkers waiting! :goofer:

    Ribbit :D

Ps: It's coming with a 1773 Virginia half-penny (my 5th) and a few other odds and ends.
