    Hello,

I have a Yuan Shi Kai Fat Man Dollar weight and diameter is right but im no where near a good authority on silver Chinese coins. I know many fakes are now done in silver so I wanted to ask your thoughts on this. I picked it up some time ago the seller was pretty reliable but he doesn't really know the coins to well either.

Nice "Fat Man".. I saw one at the NYINC show in January. I'm not a chinese silver coin expert but I did find some interesting information if you don't mind me sharing it with you?

Quote "A great source for more information about the Fatman dollar die varieties is Eduard Kann's extensive reference work, "The Illustrated Catalog of Chinese Coins," first published in 1953. But even Kann's work may be incomplete. He estimated that there may be 200 to 400 varieties in existence! In addition, the website www.dragondollar.com provides excellent information about the series. Collecting the Fatman dollar die varieties might be a collector's ultimate challenge, but beware, it could be a lifelong pursuit.".. Closed quote

I'm not an ID expert by any means. If you research these coins you may find out how difficult this could be due to the varieties.

Same here. I've had a fat man dollar for probably close to 30 years. Never questioned its authenticity, but when I started seeing more and more stories a few years ago about fakes, I did some pretty exhaustive research, pouring over many photos of authentic versions to verify my own coin and put my mind at ease.

Short of finding a fat man expert, that's the best advice I can offer. Just study the heck out of your coin relative to known authentic examples.

I'm no expert with them but I do know their are a ton of fakes out there. If it is real its a nice one, usually they are much more worn than yours. I do know that you could post it on another forum that specializes in MCC.

Looks like one of the modern super counterfeits unfortunately.

I have one of these as well. (1921 I think) I sent mine in to be authenticated and graded, which I thought was well worth the cost since I only paid $20 dollars for it.
    It came back AU55.
As others said there are a ton of fakes out there, but they usually look fake. Your coin looks good to me, but I’m no expert either. gxseries is probably correct.

And @Old World Coins, you said you picked up this coin "some time ago." How long ago was that?

Im not really into the Fat Man coins but this looks to be in good condition so I took a chance. Usually I stick to copper with the occasional silver 10 20 and 50 cents from the Empire and Republic Eras
