Hey Everyone, I was looking through some of my older coin and noticed something different on the reversed side. Under the right side of the shield is writing. To me it looks like the word LIBERTY. There’s other writing as well inside the shield . I found this coin metal detecting about 4 years ago. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
The letters appear to be backwards. If that's the case it's damaged. Please show full sized photo of both sides of the coin, the entire coin.
You have a reference number for this variety? The condition of this coin has fake written all over it!
There’s no way it is fake I found it metal detecting on some property that use to have a plantation house and ferry crossings . Last Owners of property never rebuilt where the remains of the old 3 story house was.
By digging the coin out of the ground doesn't immediately authenticate the coin. Vice Versa, I should have looked it up on Variety plus. O-102a https://www.ngccoin.com/variety-plu...-lettered-edge-half-dollars-1807-1836/817587/ Cool find and a neat clash.
Looks like a clashed die to me. However, the heavy scratches are damage resulting, probably, from the long burial. Very cool find!
There are I believe at least two varieties, in I think 1812 and 1814, that are known for this very strong, multiple misaligned die clash. Liberty shows in three places in the shield.
Thanks everyone for the positive help! Is there any value for it other than scrap weight? ( of course I’d never scrap it)
Just show a normal photo. No need to send pictures from an electron microscope. As for the reverse lettering, maybe the photo is from a mirror, or other reverse image. If that line is raised it could be a die break. But just normal photos, in full size of the obv. and rev. is more helpful than super enlargements.
It's certainly worth more than melt. And it has a lot of detail. Even with the damage, I could see $40 - $50 for it. Others may disagree. Very cool find!
If you have it authenticated by a TPG, in that condition it would probably be worth hundreds of dollars. Personally, I wouldn't touch it without it being graded, even if it came back detailed. Because I don't know enough about them to tell if it's real or not.
I agree, it seems to match O-102a, but damaged and cleaned it’s not really valuable. Cool find though!
