Found this metal detecting last fall near Charleston SC. Check out the number of times the obverse was stuck. Does anyone know what method was used to produce this coin and what would most likely cause this. The reverse is not multi-struck but all design elements on obverse are, date, bust, wording etc...Any ideas what this is worth multi struck or not? I don't generally collect Non-US coins, and really haven't researched it all that much,(except to identify) until now that is. I'll tell you what tho, the thrill of finding it and digging out of the ground myself is worth more than the coin I'm sure! I don't think I stopped smiling for three weeks after finding it! If you'll post a pic of the reverse I'll be glad to estimate a grade & value for you. The coin was made using a mechanical screw press. The reason the reverse does not show the multiple strike is because the planchet rests on the reverse ( anvil die ) and the obverse ( hammer die ) is pressed down onto it. These double or multiple strikes are not uncommon really, but yours is quite pronounced and is very collectible

You can really see the multi striking along the bust line in this one. I'm also going to post this in "what's it Worth" forum to see what others have to say, not that I don't trust your opinion, it's just fun to see how different people view the same thing. The coin would grade Fine - it is worth about $40. And it's not necessary to post in the WIW Forum - everybody can see it right here
Mattman,your Piece of 8 is from Mexico,as the Mexico City mint uses a monogram (M with an 'o' above it) as its mintmark. Aidan.
