Hello everyone. I am new at this and stuck with the coins I had in my change jar. I have a 95d penny which has been used as a canvas and only a no mintmark sample to compare it to. I was wondering if coins of the same year from the different mints vary in any significant way. If I could leave home to find my own sample I wouldn't intrude on you for what must seem like a dumb question. Thanks!![
Probably a "P" has no mint mark. There are no dumb questions when collecting coins. This is how we learn.
@Lost Boy I'm still not sure what you mean. Are you, by any chance, referring to the difference in color? ~ Chris
Not the color. His facial features seem different from one coin to the other. Cheeks, facial hair, and his ears. Also his coat is more defined with more crisp lines on the d even though it looks more worn. Just curious. Thanks
Depending upon the state or condition of the dies used, features can change over time or the life of the die. Also, when a die is serviced to extend it's life, die polishing may lighten or even completely obliterate some features.
Welcome to CT. First, more than one Die is used at a time. Next, dies are replaced as they wear out. Each die may be a little different but they are all the same. Then there's the dies condition as it's being used. A new Die will have stronger features than a used Die. A worn die can give soft and mushy details on a newly struck coin. The Mint uses several tricks to prolong the life of a die. That also changes the features. So yes they can be a little different but yet they are all basically the same.
Thank you very much. That makes perfect sense. I am researching the minting process now and that along with your help should help me understand the things I am seeing when looking at money through a magnifying glass. I appreciate you taking the time!!
