Don't see too much about SA coins. I only have 3 half silver but for relatively modern times they have low mintages. 1952, King George v1, 28.28g mint 1.7 million 1957, Queen Elizabeth 11, first portrait, 28.28g, mint 150,000 1960, African Union, 28.28g, mint 22,000 all uncirculated
That's all too modern for me, except I do have the 1960 in my silver dollars of '60 set. This is what I like to see for a silver 5 shillings from South Africa.
Fantastic coins! I don't know if I own any of the 5 Schilling coins but have a lot of the smaller denominations.
Well, it is one of the so called "key dates", and can be kind of pricey, so it you had one you would probably know it. I still wonder why the NGC and the Numista mintage totals disagree so much. I keep seeking the 1893 penny and getting shot down in the auctions.
Unfortunately South African coins have been steadily losing value. Even the key dates have more than halved in value over the last decade. Here are some of my collection which I have posted earlier in various threads (No 5 shillings though): 2006 Proof set of 4 coins (1 oz, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/10) - FDC
I have always had a fondness for the Z.A.R. issues. Decades ago there was an American dealer who specialized in South African coins and he had a way of cleaning his coins with baking soda, q-tips and other chemicals resulting in all his coins looking the same. Some of the old timers here may remember him.
My daughter lives in so.africa now. She collects. But she's buying the new stuff. Mostly silver. She calls the gold junk. Never see anything nice. Better silver pieces. So she says.
Some 'junk' gold for her to consider 1892 Double Shaft pond MS62 And of course the 1892 single shaft pond: The 1892 double shaft was essentially, a mint error as the Berlin Mint used the double shaft design of the European wagon on the reverse instead of the single shaft wagon used in SA. By the time error was noticed, most of the coins had already been struck. The single shaft wagon design was struck later in very small number, making it an instant rarity.
